At his peak every 3rd grader knew who Jordan was,
I read the question wrong. I was looking at most famous today.
At their peak, I would say ali and then Tiger.

Shaq anyone (for worldwide fame)?

I don't watch golf at all, but it's hard for me to imagine any athlete being more famous than Jordan was between the commercials, the dream team, and space jam.

Any answer besides Jordan is just asinine

It has to be Jordan. Not to start any type of controversy, but basketball seems to entertain all classes (lower, middle, upper), while golf seems to a more reserved sport whose viewership would seem to be skewed towards people who play it more (the wealthy and upper middle class). Ergo, I would imagine Jordan to be more recognizeable.

you youngsters are clueless in these threads.
You're being kind.
Thanks to Howie, everybody knew who Clay/Ali was.
I'd have Tiger second and MJ third also.

Ali was instantly recognizable throughout the world. His olympic career, religious conversion, political protest, were well chronicled. But , he also was the World Heavyweight Champion (when it meant something). The world heavyweight Champion in boxing for most of the 20th century was one of the most well known figures in the world.

Ali was amazingly well known at his height, but with changes in media communication and the opening up of China I think I might say Jordan now
who?

The Pope, President of the US and the world's best soccer player were the top three. More people in the world know who Pele is than Jordan.

I'll agree with the Pope & Pele.

At one time Ali was named as the most recognized face in the world. I specifically remember him talking about in an interview once, and his mentioning how incredible it was that he was better-known than the Pope.

Ali
I really don't believe basketball was a very popular sport outside of the U.S during Jordan's peak. But he did make the sport more popular worldwide.
I guess I have somewhat of the same thoughts about golf, hell I don't even know when Tiger's peak was. But if it weren't for the new technology how popular would Tiger Woods really be.
Boxing is truly a worldwide sport. Everyone, everywhere fights even if they are not a fan of the sport they know of it. Plus you have to add in the political aspects with Ali. Him converting to Muslim and not wanting to fight in Vietnam. And to add one more thing, Ali may have been the most charismatic athlete ever, he never shied away from the media, he always showed his personality to the world.
