No, but as much as everyone is laughing at it, when the USA does eventually produce an outstanding soccer player, he'll be on the list.

Out of these three men, who was the most recognized American athlete worldwide

I would say ALI cause he has spanned GENERATIONS.

Jordan changed the way WE play BBALL. Tiger has changed the way we play GOLF.

BUT ALI CHANGED OUR LIVES!!!!!

That's because all his jerseys ended up going to goodwill when their owners discovered Jordan was propped up trash.

Probably not as much as he hates us.

Doesn't mean squat. You realize USA/Nike donates all this crap to the world. Doesn't mean they knew much about him.

They're not watching the NBA finals in Africa...if they have electricity, they are watching soccer. The 1 billion people in India are watching Cricket and field hockey.

If you play an organized sport in a country/region that doesn't play it, you're not going to have as much relevant fame.

This is why Ali/Louis have such an advantage.

Cricket, yes. I'd say soccer is more popular in India than field hockey.

It's a distant second.

India and Pakistan are the only two countries where cricket is the most popular sport. 3/4 of the world it is soccer and it isn't even close.

I wasn't taking up for the popularity of cricket around the world, just in India. The point of the post was to question India's love for field hockey.

I would say that more people in the world know the name of Landon Donovan than Lebron James.

I don't know about in his peak...but Mario Andretti has to be one of the most famous globally.

Soccer is the most popular sport but with a plethora of different worldwide leagues.

One league in auto racing, if you will, is broadcast all over the world.

quote:

Formula One Racing has the largest television viewing audience in the world.

Formula One can be seen in almost every country and territory around the world. The 2008 season attracted a global audience of 600 million people per race.

When I traveled in Asia, South America and Europe the only thing on TV all the time was soccer and Formula 1 racing. Americans overestimate our sports and can't comprehend that most of the world isn't watching at all and simply doesn't get NBA, NFL, MLB on TV.
