Always thought these stats were kinda wild:

Played 17 years, only 5x had a team with 11 or more wins. Best record last 7 seasons? 10-6.

Didn’t make playoffs from 1986-1989

Jimmy Johnson experiment didn’t work. Went 8-8; 9-7; 10-6; 9-7

Anyone remember the Minnesota Vikings rumors at the end of his career?

Ultimately - Dolphins failed to get him the help he needed.

He threw for over 5K yards and 48TDs in 1984. He would be unstoppable with today's rules. He had the quickest release you'll see. I would say somewhere in the top 10 is fair

Marino never had a running back Worth a shite. He would throw, throw, and throw some more. Also, he never had a super star WR, just a bunch of role players, like OJ McDuffie and Mark Ingram and Orande Gadsden.

He had Mark Clayton and Mark Duper for most his career if I remember correctly.

I grew up a Saints fan but Marino and those Dolphins teams were my ‘other’ favorites. It was always fun seeing him and the Marx bros on Monday night.

I’d say he’s about 7th best and clearly ahead of Aikman, Jim Kelly, and probably even Elway. Behind Montana.

#4 all-time after Brady, Manning, and Unitas. Football Perspective had a really good write-up about the greatness of Marino in their QB rankings list they made four years ago.

quote:

The NFL has changed dramatically since Dan Marino retired. No major passing record, single-season or career, is more than seven years old. Coaching strategies and rule changes — most notably the policies on illegal contact and defenseless receivers — have fundamentally changed the nature of the game in a way that makes it impossible to compare contemporary passers to those of Marino’s generation. Dan Marino retired 18 years ago, so it’s easy to forget how unbelievably dominant he was and how dramatically he re-defined our ideas of what a quarterback could accomplish. When Marino retired following the 1999 season, he held NFL records for each of the following stats. The number in parenthesis indicates the second-place figure, followed by Marino’s lead as a percentage.

Highest Passer Rating, Rookie Season — 96.0 (Greg Cook, 88.3, 9%)

Most Passes Completed, Career — 4,967 (John Elway, 4,123, 20%)

Most Passing Yards, Career — 61,361 (John Elway, 51,475, 19%)

Most Touchdown Passes, Career — 420 (Fran Tarkenton, 342, 23%)

Highest Touchdown/Interception Differential, Career — +168 (Joe Montana, +134, 25%)

Most Passing Yards, Season — 5,084 (Dan Fouts, 4,802, 6%)

Most Touchdown Passes, Season — 48 (Kurt Warner, 41, 17%)

Highest Touchdown/Interception Differential, Season — +31 (Kurt Warner, +28, 11%)

Most Seasons Leading League, Pass Completions — 6 (Sammy Baugh and Sonny Jurgensen, 4, 33%)

Most Seasons Leading League, Passing Yards — 5 (tie with Sonny Jurgensen)

Most Seasons 3,000 or More Yards Passing — 13 (John Elway, 12, 8%)

Most Games, 400 or More Yards Passing, Career — 13 (Joe Montana and Warren Moon, 7, 86%)

Most Games, 400 or More Yards Passing, Season — 4 (many players, 2, 100%)

Most Games, 300 or More Yards Passing, Career — 63 (Dan Fouts, 51, 24%)

Most Games, 300 or More Yards Passing, Season — 9 (tie with Warren Moon and Kurt Warner)

Most Games, Four or More Touchdown Passes, Career — 21 (Johnny Unitas, 17, 24%)

Most Games, Four or More Touchdown Passes, Season — 6 (Brett Favre, 5, 20%)

Marino held most of those records by at least 20% — he was in a different stratosphere of production than his peers and predecessors. Until the new illegal contact policy in 2004, Marino still had more 40-TD seasons than every other player in history combined, including the top two of all time. He also held dozens of less significant records, like most consecutive games with 400 passing yards, or most consecutive postseason games with a touchdown pass.

Brett Favre was the most overrated QB in the last 30 years in the NFL. He committed way too many moronic, boneheaded turnovers at the most inopportune times.

I see what you're doing here and I like it. Have to wonder how many people are about to make themselves look very, very foolish in this thread.

He’s the most skilled thrower there ever was. And his release is as quick as they come.

Sadly, he never had a running game or defense worth a shite.

Over Marino's NFL career his TD to INT ratio was less than 2/1. His average over his career was 24.7 to 14.8 per season, his career pass completion percentage was under 60%, he never hit 50 TDs in a season......not trying to knock him down but the TD to INT ratio is not very good for a career stat. Brady is over 3/1, Manning was better than 2/1 , as was Montana, as was Drew Brees, Rodgers is 3/1....dude was obviously HOF legit but I'm not sure if he was the most skilled thrower ever, maybe had the most capable arm but the stats don't support the most skilled thrower in NFL history.

Best passer in history.

Best QB?

That's for how you determine that nebulous question in your own mind.

But what's not disputable is he's the best passer of all-time.

Not in the top 20. If he was great he would have won at least one Superbowl.

In today's offenses he would be unstoppable.

Way better than Brees or Manning.

Just watch the Bears game. Start to finish.

Great, now prove that TD/INT ratio is the one stat that determines how good a QB was.

Russell Wilson has the 3d best all-time TD/INT ratio, so maybe you can start there.

Also, on the top-10 all-time list, literally every player on the top ten of the list played last year. You have to go down to #18 before you find any QB that did not play in the 2020s.

Joe Montana is #30 on the list, behind, among many other QBs, Tyrod Taylor and Jared Goff.

So this is maybe not the end-all metric for determining who was the best QB across eras.

He is the least sacked qb in modern times. Pretty remarkable with how many time he threw the ball.
His pocket presence and how he moved within it was as good as it gets.

IMO- he is the best pure passer I’ve ever seen. There wasn’t a throw that he could not make.

quote:

Even Bill Walsh himself said so and gushed over Dan. “Joe Montana was a product of a system. Dan Marino was a system.”—Bill Walsh
