It's not what it once was, but in the 90s it was amazing. Older 49ers fans still despise the Cowboys

Jimmy Johnson's memorable quote "How bout dem Cowbaws" came after a victory against San Fran in the playoffs.

Dallas signed Coach Prime from San Fran so he could stop #80.

And Sir-Mix-Alot did mention the rivalry in his Jam On It remix "What's Up?"

But after the mid 1990's...not much to talk about.

The most recent occurrence happened almost 30 years ago. Last year was the first time they met in the playoffs in any round since 1994. They're not in the same division and don't play each other every year in the regular season either. Both teams have much bigger rivalries.

It was more so just a "rivalry" of an era where both teams where really good and happened to play each other in the playoffs frequently. I'd compare it to something like Alabama/Clemson in college football.

It was THE rivalry of the NFL in the 90's. The 1992, 1993 & 1994 NFC Championship games were de facto Super Bowls. Dallas and San Francisco played some great games, and then blew out whatever AFC team played them in the SB.

Don't forget Charles Haley bringing his sacks and DPOY trophies to Dallas.

new rivalry

It is not a new rivalry. Go look up the 70's and 80's history as well. There has been classic playoff and regular season games. It is rivalry that is not yearly but it is one that has consequences when played

There's been I think 6 NFCCG (70, 71, 83?,92, 93, 940 multiple Division Round games. and I want to say the regular season games get heated as well. Add the 10 Super Bowl wins and 3 Super Bowl losses from the winner of the game.

This goes in the "historically significant matchup" bucket more than it does Rivalry

Best NFL rivalry of the 90's. All time though it isn't real high, all timers are more geared toward divisional teams that play each other every year, most years multiple times.

I would say it’s easily top 5. While you don’t have the large number of games against each other, you do have a number of key playoff games. They met in the NFC championship game 6 times with the winner being the eventual Super Bowl champion 5 of 6!

You could say the same about the Bears-Giants rivalry. They played each other in 6 NFL Championship games. The two other times they met in the playoffs, the winner won the Super Bowl.

I know some old-timer Bears fans who still hate the Giants. The original Bill Swerski's Superfans sketch on SNL even worked in some swipes at New York.

All that said, I doubt most people consider that matchup one of the best rivalries in the NFL, much like 49ers-Cowboys.

Some of the best football ever played was the 90s Cowboys and Niners. The NFC Championship was the real Super Bowl.

Aikman
Irvin
Emmitt
Rice
Young
Deion

And on...

Its the most talented rivalry in NFL history during that period. Both owners went whole hog in spending for the cream of the crop.

In fact Jerrah, snatched Deion away from the Niners.

Miners snatched Ken Norton Jr. from the Cowboys.

From 1991-1996 it was an arms race between these two franchises.

Their "rivalry" is essentially confined to one memorable playoff game in the 80's (the catch) as well as 3 year in the early 90's.

They also met multiple times in the 70’s in the playoffs, and the 49ers just beat the Cowboys last year.

Not to mention all the big regular season games they’ve played over the years. Very few cross divisional rivalries are bigger. Maybe Steelers-Raiders.

Both the 49ers and Cowboys have played Green Bay a bunch in the playoffs also.

Considering it's not a divisional rivalry I would say pretty damn high.

What other non-divisional ever register a blip?

The heyday of this rivalry was when both the 49ers and Cowboys were going through their dynasty eras. Then it was pretty much over after Aikman and Young.

IMO it is the best non divisional rivalry in the NFL when they run into each other in the playoffs. IIRC this will be the 9th time Dallas and SF have met in the playoffs which will be the most in NFL history

I view it similar to the Lakers/Celtics rivalry as regardless of current players/era/recent history, when both of these teams are very good, this game just hits different than most playoff matchups imo.

Also it might just be the best uniform matchup in NFL history

Cleveland vs Baltimore has to be up there simply due to how the original Browns left.

We hate the 9ers, the Steelers, and the Packers just as much as we hate the Eagles, Giants, and Redsk… whoops… “Commanders.”

This is on an individual basis because I don’t think that’s true. Also, some of it depends on your era. Older fans tend to hate the Steelers more, fans in their 40s-50s tend to dislike the Niners more, and more recent fans may hate the Packers more.

But in general, it’s the NFC East teams the most.
