All about TV dollars

Hamilton would be best of Saskatoon or Regina

People put way too much stock into empty seats at tipoff or not selling out the upper deck (not a Rockets fan btw). It's about TV revenue, corporate sponsorship, and premium seating/suites. Houston would do just fine in all of those areas. 5th biggest metro and I think 3rd or 4th most Fortune 500 companies. Doesn't matter how die hard your hockey fans are, it's about money.

I was reading a Coyotes article the other day, and in the comments a guy was talking about how the arena is on the opposite side of the city as all of the smaller hockey/ice centers. Apparently traffic to the arena on weeknights is awful, so most people won't drive the hour and a half to two hours on a weeknight for a game.
Sounds like the Tampa Bay rays issue. Built stadium, away from the fans.

Could Milwaukee or Green Bay ever pursue a franchise?
The city of Green Bay is actually just a touch over 100k and the metro area around 325k...so no, it wouldn't work there. But Milwaukee would be great and the natural rivalry with the Wild and Hawks would be awesome.

frick it give Wichita a franchise.
50th largest metro in the US
Have a minor league club that gets good support
Fans would be rabid for a pro team.
Know it has absolutely 0 chance of even getting brought up without getting laughed out but wanted to throw a bone for my current home.
Real suggestion that I don’t think has been mentioned yet Kansas City? Have a nice stadium ready to go in the sprint center and they do a good job of supporting their teams.

But by that very logic, both the Coyotes and Panthers should be doing amazing then right? Phoenix and Miami are huge cities and yet the both are doing awful. Atlanta Thrashers tried and failed miserably as well. Those are literally 3 of the biggest metros in this country, so yes fan support DOES matter!! Butts in seats DOES matter.
Again, just as a remember, one franchise is in the Eastern Confernce and the other one is in the Western Conference, so relocation would have to be done with the current balance of conferences in mind.
Florida Panthers —> Quebec Nordiques
Arizona Coyotes —> Utah, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Portland?

Yes and the Phoenix Coyotes and Florida Panthers consistently get terrible TV ratings on their RSNs

LINK: Good Breakdown of ALL relocation candidates
The above link has some great information regarding all the possibilities of every city mentioned. Highly recommend reading the page. In the article is states that the Coyotes operate at a 19 million dollar loss every season making it the least profitable franchise in sports. Yikes!!! It also states that multiple surveys and studies show that Canada could support upwards of 12 franchises successfully. Thats crazy!!

Ok, all caps, I get it. I never said it didn't matter at all. Maybe those teams don't have competent ownership that promotes the team enough in their area and executes the things I mentioned. As for butts in the seats, Houston has a downtown arena ready to roll. Florida and Arizona arenas are in BFE.

The Rockets were 4th in the league in revenue last year, behind the Knicks, Warriors, and Lakers.

They were 6th in the league in the percent of their arena being filled:

And that’s while they also have the 6th highest average ticket price in the league:

So yeah, you’re way off base about Houston not supporting the Rockets.

In an ideal world you’d have 2 Vancouver teams, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Hamilton, 2 Toronto teams, Ottawa, Quebec City, and 2 Montreal teams
13 Canadian and 19 in the USA
NYR, NYI, BOS, PHI, PIT, DET, WAS, CHI, STL, DAL, SEA, SJ, LA, ANA, MIN, COL, LV, NAS, and TB

It's 2.5 hours away so I think probably outside of the zone they have control over.
The real reason is that Betteman went all in on the sun belt thing in the early 2000s and doesn't want to back out of it. If anything he doubled down with Vegas.
You could probably support an NHL team in most mid sized candian cities ( look at London in the OHL/ every team in Saskatchewan). Betteman on tht whole refuses to move teams back up there and it doesn't help his overall bottom line since they already make an insane amount off the Canadian TV deal while putting teams in big market NHL cities would help the American numbers.
The only thing he's done right in the last 20 years is the situation with COVID other then that his business model has been getting expansion fees, overdoing outdoor games and banking on the fact that Canada is hockey obsessed.
The two teams won't move unless shite really hits the fan or the commissioner changes
