Plus, with the existing Dome, you wouldn't have seen an Atlanta MLS team, and Atlanta would not be a player, at all, the next time the US hosts a World Cup.

I'm joking, but I'm not sure I see the fiscal sense of building a $1.6 billion stadium to ensure a city of the financial windfall that is an MLS team.

Seriously though, how does the new stadium guarantee them an MLS team? I think the only team that plays in a stadium bigger than 40,000 or so is Seattle, and most don't even come close to selling out their small stadiums.

The city is only the hook for $200M and it is coming from discretionary hotel tax funds.

If Arthur wants to spend a shite ton on a new stadium who really cares?

The Falcons’ $1.4 billion stadium has cost the public close to $600 million and that number is expected to continue to rise ahead of the 2017 opening. To add further insult to injury, Atlanta’s deal with the Falcons left no funds for the city to keep the Braves, who then moved north to Cobb County.

That article is from March of last year. Cost to taxpayers won't go down, that's for sure, and it was sitting at $600 million back then.

Something a little more current...though I'm not sure if the $700 million figure is the new cost to taxpayers.

quote:

For the Falcons stadium, taxpayers are covering $200 million of construction costs for the $1.5 billion facility through bonds. The lodging tax will repay the bonds and hundreds of millions of additional hotel-motel tax revenue will go toward debt service and operating and maintaining the stadium over three decades. The figure is likely to be more than $700 million, though there is no hard cap on spending.

The new stadium was designed with soccer in mind. It will be much better suited for soccer than the Georgia Dome was. And Atlanta has already sold over 27k season tickets. I think they are planning to cap attendance at 35-40k.

I disagree completely. Other than location, the Georgia Dome was superior to the Superdome in pretty much every respect. But, I stopped asking the question raised in the OP because for some odd reason it pissed off people from Atlanta incessantly.

You're not referring to some of that character left after the evacuees trashed the place after Katrina?

I'm sure that sounded funny in your head before typing out.

The way I interpret it, the city just agreed to continue giving the Falcons a portion of the hotel-motel tax (~$17M/yr) until year 2050. The Falcons were already getting that each year. I think it is a little misleading to just lump it in with the $200M the city agreed to but also probably wrong to just ignore that the city pays them for that each season.

I was there almost 10 years ago and I thought it was pretty nice. It seems like a waste of money to get rid of it. Surely it still has 15-20 good years left in it.

when is the last time you've been in the Superdome?

The last time I was in the GA Dome, I would have rather watch a game in the GA Dome. However the last time I was in the Superdome (2016) I would have said the Superdome.

They are both pretty shitty

The Saints just need to dump a ton of money into the Superdome, I wouldn't build new if I was them.
