It is a cool looking stadium.

The thing that floors me about stadium costs is that the digestible cost for ARENAS is now $1B. I remember jaws hitting the floor when Jerryworld was built for that amount.

The Superdome is much better. It's in a better place. It looks better inside. It has character. The Georgia Dome is stale and terrible inside.

No.

Maybe it's time to come to terms with yourself. The truth will set you free.

Georgia Dome looks better than Superdome but the Saints manage to keep playing in it.

Atlanta is swimming in growth and can afford fancy new stadiums. New Orleans is stagnant dump that refuses to change

This is true.

Also, the Georgia Dome would have needed hundreds of millions of dollars in renovations and they needed to replace to roof soon

OK I had no idea it needed renovations. Was thinking to myself ATL metro must be booming with Money since they're getting 2 new Stadiums. Both football and baseball stadiums were built in the 1990s. They still look to be in good shape on TV.

I'm just taking a guess here, but the "hundreds of millions in renovations needed" came from Falcons ownership in terms of both dollar amount and "need"?

Second, I think we need to unpack "needed" a bit. Were they needed because the dome was going to collapse? Leak rain water on the seats? Or was it more of needing/wanting to invest tons of money to create or expand revenue streams. The first is "need" the second is "want".

Both are perfectly adequate. I'm excited for the new stadiums, but neither of the existing stadiums is remotely approaching dump status. They're actually quite good, if boring, venues.

I'm sure there are many other reasons, but tend to believe that getting to host certain things that it's already hosted is not tops on that list
Super Bowl was probably not coming back to Atlanta nearly as quick if the Dome had stayed. Plus the new venue has a better chance of getting into a rotation as opposed to an every now and then event.

The SECCG was locked in no matter what. The CFP semi-final was a given because it was the Peach Bowl, which is an annual event. I am not so sure the Dome hosts the championship quite as soon.

Atlanta is the $50,000/year millionaire of cities who "needs" a new set of golf clubs.

So I think we're basically in agreement that aside from maybe guaranteeing a Super Bowl sooner, the new stadium isn't really bringing in events it wasn't getting or going to get before.

Seems like a traditional situation where an owner essentially threatens or strongarms the city into coughing up the cash.

Funny thing is, when the Packers want to update the stadium, people are falling all over themselves handing over $300 for the renovation for a piece of paper (in addition to the small tax implemented to pay for it).

Have you ever been to the dome? It is four brick walls with a tarp over it. A very basic sporting structure.

It is sitting on top of prime parking lot space. Needs to go!

The roof would have needed to be redone very soon. That was not a want. It was nearing the end of its life cycle.

The seats and field turf were replaced around 2007-2008 I think. They look pretty good on tv.

The GWCCA will own the stadium, the Falcons and the NFL will operate the stadium under a 30-year agreement

Odds they stay in it for 30 years? Wait until teleported concessions and other shite is being built into stadiums in fifteen years. Suddenly the new stadium will suck.

Also, saw an article from June of last year that the cost is $1.6 billion and rising. Holy shitballs.

Maybe. But I also think it will help get more of those events (hosting the events in the past is not a guarantee or a precursor of hosting in the future.

Plus, with the existing Dome, you wouldn't have seen an Atlanta MLS team, and Atlanta would not be a player, at all, the next time the US hosts a World Cup.

The city is only the hook for $200M and it is coming from discretionary hotel tax funds.

If Arthur wants to spend a shite ton on a new stadium who really cares?
