It's because they're Catholic.

Back in the 60s,when I was a kid, the Notre Dame playback would be televised every Sunday morning...this was in Mobile, Al., a city that is 30% Catholic.
While there are other Catholic universities, Notre Dame far and away has the greatest football tradition.

The team is an embodiment of their coach.

The bandwagon audience loved Miami because Jimmy Johnson was a bad arse and his players backed up his attitude on the field.

It's hard to pull for Alabama when the coach thinks he's freakin' Napoleon and his team is so clinical and precise in their execution. There's no personality or compelling figures on the team.

This is the correct answer.

Bama has been absolutely great over nearly a decade, but dominating a sport doesn’t equate to transcending it, which is what the U did.

Saban is the GOAT, but Alabama is pretty boring. Small market also.

So is Georgetown, Villanova, and Boston College. Neither of these had exclusive rights TV deals. Not saying the fact that they are a Catholic university hasn't been a factor, but the TV deals have helped them equally as much as any other catholic university.

Those other schools didnt have the history or tradition of ND. It's hard to describe on a message board post what Notre Dame represented to older generations of ethnic Catholics in this country. That following is a major part if their TV deals and historic bowl favoritism. We're going kinda chicken and egg here.

Notre Dame is THE National Catholic University, and always had a country-wide recruiting program.

Miami was located in a major American city, was coming of age at the same time the rap scene was booming. Rappers all wore Starter Jackets with the U on it and a bunch of white kids loved it.

FSU was so dominant, and also had a bit of the rap game going as well.

Alabama is in a poor state and is still very much a regional program - most of their recruits come from the South. They pick off a few from other areas (like Tua) but still mainly southern players. Whereas Bowden and Johnson were flashy coaches, Saban is not. Plus Alabama is in the SEC, and everyone not in the SEC, hates the SEC.

I'll concede then. I'm only 31 so I can admit that I can't speak for the older generations. I know my dad hated Notre Dame because they were the team that was always on when CFB wasn't widely televised, but then again he wasn't a devout catholic.

You’d think with their recent dominance, people nationwide would be hopping onto their fan base and wearing Alabama gear.

The South? Bama's history of intolerance? Their fanbase stereotyped as hicks and sister frickers?

It ain't too cool to sister frick. Not many people want to hop on that stereotype.

No but seriously, Bama carries a lot of baggage to be a bandwagon fan. And a lot of people just can't identify with the Deep South if you are Northeast...where most bandwagon fans of CFB come from because they don't have their own dominant teams.

Literally the only positive thing Alabama has going for it nationally is college football. On all other fronts it’s considered a shitty backwards place associated with the worst parts of our history.

I was going to say something biting to you but unfortunately your entire post is correct. It simply isn't cool to associate with Alabama as it is places like LA or Miami.

Yes, you're right; it's a combination of the two.

Miami was also throwing the ball downfield in the 80’s with a wide open offense, while a lot of the other big programs were still running the option or veer.

Alabama is a machine that just wears out teams. Very different style.

It's already happening. Go out and about in BR and you'll likely find someone wearing Bama gear. It's primarily black people, but not exclusively.

15 years ago you rarely saw anyone wearing Bama gear in and around Louisiana. Now it's not uncommon at all. Hell, just last week I was at a conference in NOLA where the speaker was wearing a Bama bracelet. People were making small talk with him after his speech and talking about Bama football (you know, because he had the bracelet on). Someone asked him who Bama was playing tomorrow (the conf. was last Friday). His response was "I don't know. Arkansas, I think."

Being the a-hole that I am I chime in and say "No. They're playing Tennessee. I thought that was supposed to be some BIG rivalry?"

This guy is a self avowed HUGE Bama fan, yet had no idea Bama was playing the game that essentially dictates the scheduling format for the entire SEC.

I think it's mainly a southern douchebag thing. Guy I went to school with never once mentioned Bama and now he wears Bama gear and even has an A on his truck. He's just a weird jackass so it makes sense that he'd go that route.

It's almost like the kid in school that everybody knew was gay and you're just waiting for him to come out of the closet and make it official. That's how new Bama fans are born.

Well how do you think they got these exclusive TV deals? They didn't just get picked out of a hat.

Miami's popularity was generally among the younger generation of the 80's and early 90's. My dad's generation (baby boomers) hated Miami, and they still do. What teams do the teenagers of today follow, outside of their local teams? I live in Alabama, so naturally it's pretty much all Bama and some Auburn.

When you think of Miami, swag comes to mind. When you think of Alabama, Harvey Updyke and ludicrous national title claims come to mind.

I agree. More white kids in south Louisiana wore Miami gear than LSU stuff back in the 90’s. It was almost like a fashion statement.
