I wonder whether these paid mercenaries are even students anymore.

Good afternoon Mr. Rip Van Winkle. Glad you could join us.

Football players in particular haven't really been "students" for about 2 decades or so.

Only thing new about "student athletes" is now your description of them as paid mercenaries is MUCH more accurate.

Most of the guys with pro potential place zero value on a college degree.

I had a history class with LSU basketball legend Don Redden. This was one of those classes with well over 100 students in the basement of Lockett. The professor was Sydney Cohen, who was an entertainer at heart.

When Don would actually show up for class, he’d sit in the back row or two and read a Sports Illustrated. One day when Don attended after a prolonged absence, Dr Cohen announced “Ah! Look who decided to grace us with his presence today! Welcome Mr Redden!” Don just leaned further into his SI and didn’t respond. I assumed Dr Cohen was pissed about things going on behind the scenes related to handling of athletes.

Remote online classes.

Do you think Joe Burrow ever stepped foot regularly in a classroom?

Brad Wing was just on that podcast Jalen Collins has and he talked about how the compliance department lady almost killed his football dreams before they started at LSU because of the way Austrailia gave out grades or something. His dad got a lawyer and got it figured out in a couple weeks.

Apparently the compliance lady that used to run the department for LSU was a massive bitch who loved trying to get players ruled ineligible. Apparently made a lot of extra headaches for the coaching staff.

I remember LSU having regular eligibility issues circa 2010-16. Feels like it has been years since I've heard of someone being ineligible.

I teach with two recent (last 6 years) graduates of Alabama. They were both paid tutors in the athletic center. Both openly admitted to doing work for the players. I can’t imagine that is exclusive to Alabama.

Club system

I agree. However, how many schools could actually have a “for profit” football program? And what about the rest of the athletic programs?

The NFL would have to spearhead an MLB style of minor league system.

I think as long as taxpayers are paying these entitled kids to play football, they can be a fricking student.

I took that class too. Easy A. If I remember right, the final exam/project was to write up a practice schedule.
