Before the jokes come. I’m referring to the UL in Lafayette.

Do they need to string together a few undefeated seasons and get a major cash infusion into the FB program?

Not saying they can be SEC level obviously but is the goal of being a consistent #18-#25 mainstay shouldn’t be unattainable.

Boise State did it but they didn’t have a blue blood right down the road. UCF did it but they have a massive student body/alumni base and is located in a large state.

Cincinnati should be the model here. Football rich state. Not far from a blue blood program. It’ll take money plain and simple. I know Lafayette has money. It’s just a matter of getting people to buy in. One man can do it. one man could unite the state. Cultural fit. A Louisiana icon. America loves O. He would gain traction quickly.

They’re not. That’s why I’m asking what it would take.

Read much?

Sun belt is a very entertaining conference because all the schools sit on good recruiting beds. However, most of the programs are all too poor to hold on to quality staff.

App is the only program that has proven to be consistent. Boone seems to be a great town and they have a fanbase that cares enough.

ULL is going to be like the rest of them. Got to string together quality hires like Arkansas State did or Troy has done. The transfer portal is going to rape these schools too

The same as it has always been for any respected G5 program: win and beat the big boys at their place (see BYU in the 1980s, Southern Miss in the 1980s - 2000s, Boise State in the 2000s - 2010s).

Are you aware of the G5 programs who've pulled this off? There's really only one or two (Boise State and TCU).

Honestly, any g5 who can have achieve multiple seasons of consistent wins in this crazy NIL climate, would be well respected.
Demanding the media call ULL by their athletic name, while their school name is different (before earning respect) will not.

Better attendance numbers would be a good start.

Not having one of the worst stadiums in CFB would help.

You need the right coach and not just hire your former QB for the job. Good ole boys club approach rarely ever works and that might have killed any momentum Napier brought you by following him up with that.

And even before Chris Petersen, Boise St was still considered an upper tier mid major and I-AA team. Houston Nutt, Dirk Koetter, and Dan Hawkins all had success there before Petersen, he just elevated it further. But you have to consistently hire good coaches after they get bigger jobs like Boise did to consistently be one of the better mid majors.

G5 football is hopeless at this point until it’s separated into its own playoff system

Cajuns AD would be better off pumping money into the baseball program

Maintaining it is largely based on fan support. Coaches will leave for bigger jobs in power conferences, but if you can fill up a stadium and pour in some money relative to your peers it helps. App is a little bit of a different situation since it’s pretty much the team of the Western side of the state since the triangle schools are further away and Wake is a private school. Boise benefits from being in a metro area with no other big schools to compete with.

Take a time machine back to the CFB era before transfer portal/NIL with the current admin and funding in place.

I like what they're doing with the Cajun Field renovations, but the administration needs to do something to put butts in the seats. You have a small % of people in Lafayette that truly care enough to attend the games. And the student buy-in, even during the Napier years, has been nonexistent. Maybe the new stadium and a decent name brought in to replace Desormeaux will be a start.
