It's gotta be the 73-9 Warriors or '02 Miami Hurricanes. Both teams were so dominant in their championship run and followed it up with a dominant season the next year and things just got really unfortunate for both when they got to the final stage. The Warriors had injuries and the Draymond suspension, Miami had the McGahee injury (still one of the more gruesome injuries to see happen, knees shouldn't bend that way) and of course the PI in OT to nix their win after the team was already celebrating.

I thought about this one but they didn't make the NCG so they don't really qualify. But definitely a great team that may go forgotten as time goes by. Still remember the 13-3 game in Tiger Stadium, my sophomore year in college and we were hype as frick for that game. Tebow toughed out recovering a concussion and Florida played vanilla because LSU couldn't move the ball on them. Les cowardly kicked a FG on 4th and goal from the 1 and I knew we weren't winning after that

Miami still hasn't recovered from that loss, TWO lost decades, haven't seriously contended for the natty (I'm applying this liberally) since 2003 before those back-to-back losses after they reached no. 2

2009 was the best defense in Florida history, one of the best in modern SEC History.
One more year with Mullen and I think they repeat, even after losing Harvin.
Urban was too conservative and he hired his BIL to be the OC/Yes Man. OL regressed, QB regressed, they ignored the best/second best WR on the team (David Nelson), trade to ride the inside run game with 160 lb Jeff Demps, etc. Just a complete shitshow. If Mullen had just rode it out another year waiting for a better gig than MSU, they probably win a 3rd together, Urban doesn't get talked out of retiring by Foley, Mullen takes us to 10-2 or whatever as interim and probably gets the head gig.

05 was Carroll’s worst defense (outside his first and last year with the school).
They didn’t lose because they lost focused, they just had a shitty defense.
The offense averaged 50ppg and they lost to one of the better national champions, led by the single greatest performance ever.
USC’s failure to repeat had nothing to do with “going Hollywood”. They lost almost everyone from the 04 defense.

Although the 1983 Sixers were incredibly dominant and have been largely forgotten. Even that nearly called shot of sweeping every team they faced.

This is actually before all of our times (for the most part), but I was looking up old Ohio State basketball rosters (exciting, I know.) The Buckeyes have one national championship in basketball. 1960. John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas were only Sophomores that year. Larry Siegfried, who also played in the NBA and was drafted number 3, was a Junior. Bobby Knight was a reserve.
They all came back in 1960-1961, going undefeated and ranked number one all year until losing the championship game to Cincinnati. They did have a couple of close-calls before the championship game, though.
