It just requires somewhat of an attention span to enjoy it. Sadly, most people lack attention spans so could never get into the game, regardless of great of a game it is.

It's time MLB stopped catering to the people that aren't baseball fans because those people will never be won over anyway.

It would be ice if the season ended before the fans had to wear winter gear to the World Series. And then playing the games in the rain doesn't make the product more attractive either.

In other words, finish the season in September when there will be less conflict with football. Since expanding the playoffs, there is less justification for as long a regular season

They need to cut the season down to 120 (ish) games. That way the World Series doesn't fall in the middle of football season

both leagues go NL rules- that will speed up the games.

also shorten times between innings and batters.

id shorten the season to 135-140 games, basically shave 3 weeks off to end around Labor Day. Playoffs would be over by early Oct

I love baseball but I've always said the season is way too long. Just with the length of the season alone I get burnt out before the reg season is over but when football season starts I completely lose interest.

as somebody already mentioned I'm sure, baseball's time has passed. IMHO it will never be back to it's glory years and will only continue a downward spiral(with a few exciting years in there somewhere). It's just too long and drawn out(from 9 innings to however many fricking games they play a year). The world is getting more and more ADD and baseball is the exact oposite of that trend.

Not to mention more and more people following other sports now(soccer, hockey, LaX, etc).

This is just an opinion, but I think it requires more than "somewhat of an attention span". I would rather sit quietly and read a book (pretty much any book) for 3 hours than sit through a baseball game.

I liken it to watching a construction crew work. The majority of the guys are standing around scratching and spitting while a couple are actually doing anything. And like others have said, there are way too many games and way too much time between pitches.

I agree with this. Unless you are hooked at a young age you probably won't find it interesting as an adult.

Yes, because nothing quite speeds up the game like pitching changes.

I pondered this last week as I realized that, for the first time that I can remember, I watched little to no baseball this year and had no interest in the World Series whatsoever.

There are several things that have changed about the game and the culture that I believe have a hand in what's happened to baseball.

First, Americans' attention spans have dwindled with the advent of so much technology. A 162-game season with games every night is just not going to keep the interest of the public anymore.

Second, Football is the perfect sport for the media to trumpet and for the modern individual to follow. Each week can be built up as almost a "mini-season" and fans can get excited about each week on an individual level. Impossible to do for baseball with games every day.

Third, baseball has always been a sport where the players and the idolization of them almost trumped the game itself. Fans didn't necessarily think of teams or games, they thought of Ruth, Mantle, McGwire, Jeter, etc. Baseball no longer has players that are magnets for Madison Avenue.

This is for a couple of reasons: 1. the lingering effects of the steroid era. Companies are hesitant to sink a lot into a baseball player due to the chance of a "fall from grace" due to steroids. 2. Do not interpret this as being racially charged or anti-any particular culture, but most of the "star" baseball players are Hispanic and have trouble with the language barrier. It is difficult for an American kid to get behind someone who they have trouble understanding when they speak and have trouble pronouncing their name. That's just fact. Not enough American superstars for the fans to get behind. Head and Shoulders used Joe Mauer in their commercial and I assure you 80% of viewers had no clue who he was.

The NBA succeeds because its players are front and center and because it's post-season doesn't conflict with the NFL. Also, it's easier to promote individual games. Baseball is becoming the NHL with a longer, more prolific history.

Once again MLB is more popular than the NBA

Easy. Don't test for steroids again. Let 3-4 guys bash 65+ HR a season and have a HR chase again. That will get ratings up.

1. IMO baseball games are great to go to live, but a little dry to watch on TV. That is an issue with the product itself and I think to fix that they need to speed the game up a bit. Not allowing so many time outs during an at-bat would be a good start.

2. MLB needs to embrace technology. People want to experience big moments. Having videos more available will create collective memories of past events and make people want to attend/watch games to be part of the next big moment.

3. Shorten the season. The baseball season is just a grind. I'm a pretty big fan and I am always excited at spring training, but start running out of steam by the end of the season b/c it is so damn long. Shortening the season will also help b/c football is king and having the end of the regular season and the playoffs go head to head against football is a losing battle. 154 games would be a good start and that number has a history. I also like the idea of more double headers during the season. I would have the regular season end in late Aug or early Sept with the world series being the only baseball played in October. It is ridiculous that the WS sometimes goes to November.

4. For those complaining about cost, baseball is much cheaper than other major sports. I live in Virginia and I can go to a Nats game for a reasonable price. Lots of tickets for $20 or less, and some as low as $5. You can bring in water bottles and food, and you can walk or take the Metro to a game. The tix I usually buy cost $24 and $30 last season. I think the tix at Turner Field are even cheaper (of course Turner Field is in a crappy part of Atlanta without good public transportation, which admittedly does add a bit to the cost).

Things that will never change and shouldn't change IMO:

162 game season - it's one of the many things that makes baseball great. It's a marathon, not a sprint. If you love baseball what's better than a game everyday for 6 months?

Playoffs during October - October = MLB playoffs. It's tradition. Moving it up to September would be like moving march madness to April, but worse. I don't care if it conflicts with football. Baseball had October first.

Baseball isn't the most popular sport in the world but its the best. It should never change to accommodate other sports.

Nothing. Their ship has sailed. Baseball fans will always be baseball fans, general public will gravitate towards the faster pace, team sports that are easy to watch, and provide action, action, action.

Action sports will remain as hobbies.

I bet the Yankees want to go back to the glory years. Like in 1956 when they won the WS and drew 1.4 million fans. Or in '77 when they won the WS and drew 1.7 million. That was better than the 3.5 million they had this year.

They led the league all of those years, by the way.

It's this mindset that is the problem.
