I think it comes down to preferences for football. I grew up in a household that was Saints first. The Saints are still my favorite team so I default to liking NFL more. I watch my alumni teams every week on TV and remain a fan but at a slightly lower level.

It is not like basketball where there is absolutely no question that the pro game is a superior product except maybe one weekend a year.

To me the reason college will always be better is the connection most fans have to the school. Someone in your family went to that school or you went to that school. I feel like the connection you have spending 3-5 years of your life somewhere is different than going to a stadium for years in the fall only.

No professional sports team can compare in my mind to the entire week of a game when I was at OSU. It's just a magical feeling that builds throughout the week and starting at 5 am on Saturdays there is activity on an amazing campus.

They’ll never leave your state.

That alone makes them better.

CFB used to be the innovative version of football with vast disparities of talent and the best system at decreasing variance in title determination, creating the most worthy champions in sports.

Now the NFL has stolen all of the CFB innovation and the championship is clown shoes, so the reasons to follow are decreasing exponentially.

There are none. The football skill/talent isn’t better.

However, there are traditions, rivalries, and passion that just isn’t present in NFL circles

That sounds like three arguments to why college football could be better

Of course, the biggest one of all. The NFL is simply a business entity, it exists for entertainment and to make money and nothing more. With college FB you can actually attend a university giving you an actual, real life tie to it. Unless you have played, coached, or have a relative that has played/coached you have no actual tie to an NFL team. And no simply existing in the same city they play in doesn't count. You can get a degree from UGA, for instance. You can spend the best years of your life there. Meet a spouse and lifelong friends there. Make memories that will last a lifetime there whether they're big important memories or even just small ones like taking a stroll through north campus on a beautiful spring afternoon when the weather has finally warmed up and the girls on campus have shed the winter gear and switched to shorts or sundresses. YOu can't attend the University of Dallas cowboys. You as a fan have as much actual tie to an NFL franchise as you do to your favorite movie series. You can love it to death, you can have all the posters and gear, you can watch it every weekend if you want, it still doesn't mean you starred in the movie or have anythign to do with it. You're simply a fan of it. Not the same with college.

During Covid lockdown BS, they were the same but college and NFL crowds are so different and there is no pageantry in the NFL.

There ain’t pageantry in college anymore going forward either

The instant transfer portal and paid players removes any and all ruse that college football do anything but a minor league

And the connection to a player that chose to go there, and ride it out

Now? frick, you will be getting a 3 year Michigan player that instantly becomes a buckeye. horseshite

It just means more when you have invested $40k into a university.

What I explain to people is that Football is a sport that didn’t exist. It was birthed as a college campus rec game that then started forming teams. It is a uniquely college sport.

The other aspect that I enjoy is the players are actually from that state. Probably 80% of LSU’s roster are from La. in the NFL your cheering for a team where none of the players are from there.

College football plays about 100 games a weekend and almost every single one is on national TV.

NFL plays 16 and you only get access to 6 of them

I think You get more diversity of offenses in college, and the really collegey spreads can be a lot of fun.

The NFL constantly picks up wrinkles from
College. Which means College us usually more innovative than the NFL.

As an alum I feel way more connected to LSU than I do the Saints, and the Saints are pretty emotionally connected to New Orleans after Katrina and the 2006 season.

If I lived In Denver and there was no traumatic event making me feel somewhat connected to my NFL team idk if I would Care half as much.

1. The pageantry/tradition
2. Crazy crowds, tailgating
3. More players that just want to play - NFL is much more businesslike on the player side IMO (although it does occur in CFB too but not as much)
4. Saturday>Sunday

I still think attending college football in person at home games are wayyyy better than in person nfl games.

Visiting college towns are amazing. Visiting Charlotte, Cleveland, Tampa bay are meh.

I go to a lot of our games, and I’m not sure it is better anymore. College games are too long now and are very rarely full for the whole game. The kickoff times to accommodate TV have caused some brutal early season heat. The atmosphere in the stadium much more resembles an NFL game with the piped in noise.

The campus experience is better than a stadium parking lot, but under the new proposed system, the 4 biggest games of a title run are going to be played at neutral sites. True national title contenders probably won’t play a single do-or-die game on campus.

I used to feel this way, but now that it’s clear a lot of the players don’t, I don’t know if that connection is as strong.

With instant transfers and now NIL, it seems more like the teams are just a collection of players than a group actually from your university.

I never thought I’d say this but I actually prefer the NFL now simply because of the parity. You still have a few teams that you can probably pencil in as yearly contenders but for the most part, it changes every few years, if not every year. That keeps things interesting.

College football has been ruined by the recruiting disparities. If you gave me Bama or Clemson vs the field this year in terms of who will win it all, I’d take Bama or Clemson hands down. There’s just not much of excitement when you know going into the season that there are legitimately 2-4 teams that could win the whole thing.

But regardless of how the players feel, fans can still feel the same way about the school and its impact on their lives.

Where you go to college often has way more of an influence on your life than which MLB or NBA team you support

Pageantry and just a different way of doing things…. The NFL is so structured time wise…. It’s like there are so many games that start at the same time and they just look like robots out there….
