re: What a joke...calling a timeout in the NBA allows you to advance the ball 65 ft.

You're right it's a terrible analogy. A football field is three times as large as a basketball court.

What's the logic in the rule (other than to set up an easier possession for the offense)? Why not just allow them inbound from any position on the court?
Just allowing a team to advance the ball to halfcourt just because they called a timeout makes no sense. Sure, it's set up some entertaining finishes, but if the rule is only there to keep games close, then it's a shitty rule.

Tonight illustrates why it is a rule. Last second shots that have a decent chance are more entertaining and good for the league.
If you don't like it, fine, but it is pretty easy to understand.
I see what you mean...its just too gimmicky to me. Does the NBA really need to use a gimmick to entertain people? I would rather not compromise the integrity of the game if it were me.

People only complain about the rules when it works against them.
It's been a rule for a long time.
If you replace the 2013 heat team tonight with the 97 Bulls, you would have no problem with it and would praise the Bulls for holding on to a timeout just in case they needed it like this.

I think we all understand.
I like Lebron, and complained about this a few weeks ago when watching a hornets game.
It is a stupid rule, regardless of who is playing.

I am guessing one reason for the rule is that teams don't inbound the ball to mid court and call another TO

Im just saying neither team should be able to move the ball forward just for the act of calling a timeout.

How did the rule work against me tonight? As indicated in about 10 other posts in this thread, I don't care who won or lost the game. I know it has been a rule for a long time. And it has been a dumb rule for a long time.

I understand that it makes the game more exciting but the rule doesn't make any logical sense to me. Never has. I would love to hear the guy's reasoning who proposed the rule though.

Sounds good.

I've always said I didn't like that rule. But that's the rule. Indy use it too.
But I'm pretty sure that they don't do that in college

It's not just a TO. You can advance on a dead ball or a missed FT(if you call it immediately).
It's been around my entire life and probably yours and I've never had a problem with it. It's to give the offenses a chance because contrary to popular belief, defenses in the NBA are good.

I don't watch much NBA ..this was the first playoff game I have seen all year. Tonight reminded me of how bad the rule is. Same thread could have been started a million times before...I just happened to see tonights game...

It's been around since 76

So why not give the offense and defense an equal playing field?
Wow, this is starting to sound like an NFL debate

We all know the trick.
Introduce a topic and then say: "not that it matters to me as I really do not care who wins or loses"
It hides our deep seeded and sometimes subconscious hate of a team, product, or idea.

Like the 3-point line?
(In theory) the three is more difficult than shots in the paint, therefore it's worth an extra point.
