Like the 3-point line?

Well...I guess that could be defined as a "gimmick"...but at least it is used for the full 48 minutes instead of the last 2 minutes...

(In theory) the three is more difficult than shots in the paint, therefore it's worth an extra point.

A mid range shot is more difficult than a shot in the paint, why isnt it worth an extra point?

I understand that it makes the game more exciting but the rule doesn't make any logical sense to me. Never has. I would love to hear the guy's reasoning who proposed the rule though.

Oh I have no doubt that it was put in place just for the sole purpose of making the game have "fantastic finishes"...

That's an age old debate. I think the NBA has adjusted fairly the balance between the two.

Half court shots should be worth 5. Full court shots should be worth 10.

Simple defense would have stopped that drive.

Play defense and this thread is never started.

Haha that would be interesting.

Guys would never make three shots in a row.

If you make three shots in a row they douse you in gasoline at mid-court and set you on fire.

If lebron would have played D and thrown a hand in George's face, this game would have ended in regulation.

Exactly.

Heat lose, and the thread never mentions that Indy benefited from the same rule.

You have to establish some boundaries somewhere.

His defensive error did not cost them the game. It cost him 30 minutes of extra sleep.

It's not the rule's fault that the pacers sucked on D

Dammit, I thought this was a semi-rational discussion.

Do I need to pull out the jimmies jifs?

I understand where you come from...

My thing is this...whether the clock rule in the NFL or the 3 point line in basketball is a gimmick or not is debatable. What I specifically dislike about the timeout rule in the NBA is that it gives a team extra territory that they did not earn. Scoring from 94 feet is MUCH more difficult than scoring from 25 feet. Like I said earlier...I find it to be similar to a timeout in the final 2 minutes of a football game earning the team with the ball an extra 40 yards. It just undermines the integrity of what the game is about...
