West Coast & USC guys - Why does Clay Helton still have a job?

Long story short - one of my clients is the father of a starter at USC, and we all had lunch together one day last week. The player - straight to my face, an individual who he had never met - told me "Our head coach doesn't know what the hell he's doing."
How have things been that bad but there hasn't been a move made by the Athletic Department? Was this year good enough that he's bought himself another year or two?

It seems like USC is going the Miami route where they don't care about football anymore.

1. Lynn Swann, who basically played a lot of golf and did everything possible to avoid making any real decisions, gave him a massive, multiyear buyout that made is largely impossible to fire him until this year.
2. USC has been dealing with multiple scandals that are going to end up costing the university hundreds of millions, completely derailed the university's vision of itself as competing with Stanford on the West Coast one day, and the president wants someone who isn't going to cause problems or embarrass the university. Helton is a terrible coach, but a good person who isn't going to cause problems or get the school in trouble. To the admin, this is more important than winning. There is a significant portion of the admin that is openly hostile towards the football team.
3. Helton has a horseshoe up his arse and has fluked out game after game in inexplicably lucky ways to just do enough to avoid getting fired while trotting out less and less talented teams.

It never seemed like USC had a strong core fanbase. They were good for a long time but I think they benefit from a huge contingency of front runner and sidewalk fans. most of the kids going to school there likely don't care about football as anything more than a social event and with an extended period of frustration coupled with administrations across the country being as hostile to sports as possible that is not a recipe for success. They don't have that built in passion the SEC and Big Ten has with their fanbases.

He's not getting fired during a pandemic. They'll fire him next year, if the team remains mediocre

I thought losing to a mediocre Oregon team in the Pac 12 Championship Game would be enough of an excuse to fire him.
I guess they just aren't going to fire him amid the pandemic and the admissions scandal they've got going on.
He probably has another year or two left.

Subtle lunch on corporate dollar brag.

It is still a desirable place for talented players. And make no mistake usc has as many talented players as any team in college football. They just suck at developing players. See how well usc kids turn out in the nfl vs doing nothing in college.
They are always competitive so never bad enough to fire. There is always some vague hope that things will improve based on talent on the roster

Helton should be coaching a high school team in Mayberry not the glamour position of HC at USC.
But USC tucked its tail between its legs after the sanctions and seems content on having a grandfatherly figure as HC instead of a killer.

Once USC started to get Nationally ranked in prestige next to UCLA and Cal in the Top 25, football went to shite and all the people USC hired just care about being academically prestigious like Stanford and lost that ol' USC football fervor. They don't even indoctrinate the students anymore with the band and football like they used to on their first day on campus.
Now so many International students, they don't even care about football. USC used to be a football party school with hot spoiled chicks. Now its about academic success and international fame...and prestige degrees, see Lori Laughlin.

Is there anything more nebulous than "academic" prestige? 'We're better simply because we say we're better.'

Unknown player doesn't like coach. Sure sounds legit for firing.

That's the old joke, why is Stanford so prestigious? Because its really difficult to get in.
That's literally what USC did in the 90s under President Sample...overnight made the school really difficult to get into which begat more applications and more competition and higher academic rankings.
Students are paying the ridiculous tuition for prestige but more so L.A. connections.

I don't think the player "not liking" the coach is reason for firing him, but when a starter on your team is openly proclaiming that the head coach doesn't know what he's doing - there's a much bigger issue than the player disliking the coach. Even the worst of coaches have players go to bat for them and get upset when they're fired. It's a major red flag when a major contributor, who presumably doesn't have any reason to dislike the coach, is publicly taking him to task, IMO.

Is he in the portal?
Is he an offensive lineman?
Any misdemeanors?

Actually, there are a lot of metrics. Research publications and citations are the most widely used metrics, but endowment numbers, federal grant money, the number of students graduating with PhDs, alumni giving rates, and the number of faculty who garner recognition for their work all matter in the rankings that universities use to benchmark each other.
