re: We are all in agreement that Belichick is going to fail, right?

Nope

I don’t think there’s a comparison out there that could be more polar opposite. Deion is flash and Bill is not that at all.
Belichick, like Sanders, will be recruiting off his name recognition and his accomplishments in professional football.
While you can offer that he is not flamboyant like Deion, and I would certainly agree, the ultimate pitch is the same. Neither have a strong record running a college program to sell. So both are, in essence, about selling the hype.

Its all in how you define failure.
Will he win a NC or a playoff berth at UNC? No to the former, and fairly doubtful to the later.
Will he make UNC football interesting, generate interest and ticket sales, and *probably* generate an uptick in results? Also yes.

In no world is Bill Belichick going to be selling hype lol

Prime won at an HBCU… yes, an HBCU, but he still won and add to that a decent year 2 at Colorado
Bill has no record at a college program

Fair enough.
my original point was that I expect Belichick to heavily recruit from the portal, similar to what Deion has done at Colorado.
I guess a should have realized that any mention of Deion is a bad signal to those who are overzealous in either attacking or defending him on here.

Bill shoulda approached the Bengals and pushed the coach out. Got himself another franchise QB to work with

I guess it all depends on what you think his and UNC goals are. Do I see them winning a National Championship? No. Can I see them competing for a ACC title and a playoff berth? Sure.
In a way, I could see this (even more than A&M and Ole Miss) being the first true test case on a school that just puts out insane money and tries to “buy” a team through the portal by just radically going beyond what others would pay. But, I sorta see Belichick as a guy who wants to prove how smart he is, and not fully committing to that. I actually think that Deion at Colorado is a good comp to what I expect, recruiting wise.
The guy obviously knows football. Whether or not that will translate to coddled 18-23 year olds who lack a “this is my profession” mindset, I don’t know.
well said and I agree
what is success and what is failure at UNC? can a guy with 8 Super Bowl rings adapt?
the greatest single season team of all time had Ed Orgeron as HC, how hard can it be?

Well the bar for success at UNC isn't exactly high. They've only had one double-digit win season this century (2015) and only 6 since 1980 and 7 in the history of the program (72,80, 81, 93, 96, 97 & 15)

You really typed all that?

He’s never going back to the NFL

There’s overzealousness because Prime is a lightning rod for people that love and hate him for being unapologetically black… Bill won’t get the exposure because he won’t be nearly as controversial. He might be respected, but who he is won’t resonate among players like it does for Prime. UNC football has basically been forgettable (they look like a team with powder blue as the main color) and Bill without Tom Brady has been equally so

If Deion sanders can have some success I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility that belichek can.

Just wanted to revisit this, since it's come out that his buyout is only $1 million after June 1, 2025. So if Bill goes 0-12 after just 1 season and UNC gets buyer's remorse it's insanely cheap to fire him.
I assume Bill agreed to that in case an NFL team comes calling they won't be turned off by having to pay a $40 million buyout on top of his salary, but this also essentially makes it risk free for UNC

What similarities do you see between the two then?
Posted on 12/12/24 at 11:10 pm to TackySweater
Too bad North Carolina is stuck with his son as his successor when he leaves UNC.

Why do they have to be similar?

Well you made the comparison, so obviously you see some common elements between the two. Naturally that’s how comparisons work.
If X can do it then Y can do it.
If there are no similar qualities/characteristics between both cases, then why make the comparison?
