Wayne Rooney doesn't seem to like the anti-capatilistic/commie U.S. Sports model

It's bizarre how the MLS attempts to legitimize its soccer status around the world yet abides by silly communist rules put in place 80 yrs ago by jealous NFL owners to keep their rivals from having the best teams.
quote:
the U.S., a majority of professional sports leagues operate with some kind of salary cap and allow front offices to trade its players to other teams as they see fit.
While that system has worked well for leagues such as the NFL and NBA, former D.C. United star Wayne Rooney thinks the MLS needs to consider adopting European rules if it wants to reach its "full potential."
He talked about how he saw lots of potential in the MLS but that the trade system and salary cap it uses will hold it back from recruiting world-class players in their primes.
"I know it works that way in basketball and in the NFL, but those players get paid millions and millions of pounds," Rooney said. "So, they can afford to actually do that, but MLS players can't. They probably get a small percentage of money which won't even cover the bills, won't even cover what they have to live on. It's wrong for that to happen.
"I think MLS needs to really look at that because, from seeing it, a lot of them owners are taking advantage of the league [structure], which is affecting American players…the American players are just the same as the South Americans, the English, the Spanish. The American players work just as hard, if not harder, and get taken advantage of."
A month before he played his final MLS match, Rooney told ESPN that the league's players are "underpaid" and wage increases needed to be implemented in the next collective bargaining agreement. An agreement was reached last February one a new CBA that included an expanded salary cap, increased minimum salaries and the addition of player shares for the league's media rights.
Even with the new CBA, Rooney doesn't think MLS players are receiving the benefits they deserve for playing professional sports.
"There is so much potential there, so much potential, there is so much of a market," Rooney said. I said it when I left D.C., [MLS] have to take on the rules that Europe and the rest of soccer are taking…although they might not want to, and I know the rest of U.S. sports don't do that, but if they don't, then they will never get there [level with European leagues].
"They get players like me and Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], but I can't give them Wayne Rooney from 10 years ago, Zlatan can't give himself from 10 years ago. We can give you ourselves from now, we can go there and earn a decent amount of money and give the fans some entertainment, but we can't give you our full potential…if [MLS] want players to reach their full potential, then they have to take the salary cap off."

Isn’t there a separate board for Soccer?

He's right. Salary caps should be lifted across all sports.

Wayne Rooney's a dumbass. The average MLS team had a revenue of $35 million last year according to Forbes. That's comparable revenue to teams in the EFL Championship (2nd Tier League in English Football). Add in the fact that MLS has a designated player rule which allows teams to pay up to three players higher wages and well, it shouldn't be a surprise that MLS players don't make much money. If Rooney was so concerned about his teammates making more money, he should have offered to take a pay cut when he was at DC United.

which rules are those that give the Federal Government complete control?
Private Business and their Unions making agreements IS NOT communism or socialism. It's not even really anti-free market. Those are not synonym's for things people do not like. You can argue against various rules like salary caps and the draft etc, but those things are not communism.

It MAY be time for MLS to reconsider its business model where the league determines who plays where with a strict salary cap.
This model was put in place when the league began in 1996, memories of the demise of the NASL were still strong. Teams and owners remembered how the rest of the league collapsed as NASL owners tried to keep up with the Cosmos.

what percentage of this internet forum do you think can, without googling, accurately state anything close to the definition of communism? I'm thinking roughly <3% and even that might be a little too kind.

Only made it the most successful professional sports league in history.

Imagine thinking the NFL, NBA, NHL, or MLB are communist or socialist.
Having a draft set up a certain way is not communist or socialist.
If anything they are private monopolies where the bar to entry is billions of dollars.
XFL still existed. AFL still existed. Capitalism is in play. No one else has a product anyone wants.
That's like saying two car companies coming together to fix prices is communism or socialism. Not true jack. It's as twisted capitalist as possible.

Bro, they were an inning away from going to the WS in 2016 (god damn buckets) and have been a contender for much of the last decade.
Don’t compare Jerry’s World to the House of Steinbrenner

Why do you support socialism in sports?

Why do you support giving 70 year old non-athletes more power in sports?

Why shouldn't we consider this when the salary cap is placed to ensure true capitalism can't be achieved?
The leagues are also structured to share revenue.
The irony you guys support this only because it gives your team a chance to win is not lost on me.
It's the same reason why people who support socialist regulation do so as well.

That's what our country is built on so why is it you hypocrites want it stopped when it comes to sports?
You're scared your teams wouldn't be able to compete.
That's the only reason you support this nonsense.

One of the great ironies in the world is that the most popular professional sport in the US is a restrictive league with a number of wealth-sharing policies in place; while the most popular professional sport in Europe is a near free for all in terms of league membership and player contracts.
