Wayne Gretzky once destroyed Pele, Bjorn Borg and Sugar Ray Leonard in a foot race.

And I mean destroyed.

In 1982, a 21-year-old “Great One” lined up against some of the best athletes of all time at the World Sports Masters event in Göteborg, Sweden. Gretzky put on a clinic, beating them all over 60m, in a stunning time of 7.24 seconds.

That's a blatant false start.

Pele and Gretzky got a rolling start, but Wayne still ate up Pele big time, and bjorn chased down Pele despite the big initial deficit
Would like to see Wayne and borg again without the false start
ETA: they raced again. Gretzky beat him by a step
ETA 2: Pele was 42 years old

Pele was 42 by that point
Pretty damn cool though. Something you would never in a million years see today

TBF Pele was 41 at the time.

Is anything more 1980’s than running in a sprint in a collared shirt?

Accounting for the false start
, that’s still a very good time.
6.50 is a truly world class time run by someone who will break 10.00 in the 100 meters.
So this gives us an idea of Wayne’s natural speed though.

quote:Yep. Those are gray times too for guys that don’t train at all for 60m. I guess Gretzky kinda does because he could skate close to that distance in a game
Gretzky - 7.24 Borg - 7.53
That’s a 6.5-6.9 60 yard dash, which would be considered above average for pro baseball players

Legit shocked that he was faster than Borg.
I would have bet agsinst that, and bet a lot.
Just wow…had no idea Gretzky was that fast.
Who were the other guys in the second race?

OJ Simpson SMOKED Marcus Allen in a foot race when he was 41 and Allen was in his prime.
Just saying..,

Ingemar Stenmark, the Swedish skier who is an all time great, and Kevin Keegan, an English soccer player

Well he ran on the USC sprint relay team that broke the world record in the 4 × 110-yard relay at the NCAA track championships.
OJ had legit world-class speed.
He wasn't one of these hyperbole Gus Johnson NFL "running away from the cops speed" guys...as we all know, he Bronco'd away very slowly.
