Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson says NCAA should revise rules after Kenny Pickett’s fake slide

After Pickett broke containment on a third-down run, he briefly stutter-stepped and pretended to slide after picking up the first down. Two Wake Forest defenders froze, figuring Pickett was giving himself up. Instead, Pickett made a quick cut and raced another 40 yards for a touchdown before blowing kisses to the crowd in the end zone.
While Clawson acknowledged after the game there is no rule preventing Pickett from doing what he did, he said the NCAA should consider such a rule.
"If that is the rule, I will just have my guy fake knee all the way down the field, and really, what do you do?" Clawson said. "So it's something the NCAA is going to have to look at, and you know, you can't fake a slide."
Clawson said he had previously never seen a play in which a quarterback pretended to give himself up, only to keep running.
"You just train your players, as soon as your quarterback starts sliding, you stop because if you touch him it's going to be a penalty," Clawson said. "He started his slide and our kids stopped playing. I don't think he did it intentionally, but if he did, he's brilliant. I just think he reacted as an athlete. But what do you tell your players? The quarterback is protected, and there are two guys there who could have made a play but stopped playing because he started to slide."
Pickett admitted after the game that he did do it on purpose.
"Yeah, it was intentional," said Pickett, the ACC Player of the Year, who accounted for three touchdowns on Saturday night. "I just kind of started slowing down and pulling up and getting ready to slide and I just kind of saw their body language and they just pulled up as well. ... I have never done that before. I just kind of kept going after I initially started to slide."

We beat this dead horse already
Waiting on an announcement from the officiation crew from the game or ACC officials.

I seem to be the minority on this one, but I thought it was a great deke out and the D shouldn’t have dropped their guard

He has a point. What’s to stop the qb from almost kneeling all the way down the field?

If the defense doesn't let up they get slapped with big penalty yards and potential ejections.
Great move by the QB but the defense is in a lose lose situation there. Let's even it up a bit

I agree with you, I thought it was pretty slick. It didn't even look like a fake slide to me, it was like a back foot drag and a juke cut at the same time.

Should basically be the same rules as a fair catch. Once it is initiated in any way, the player is restricted from advancing the ball.
Otherwise it is stupid to have the rule for punts and kickoffs but not in this situation.
Typical shortsighted rule changes, but that’s the norm in sports.

I don't blame the player for doing it , but the rules need to be re-visited.

The rules were not enforced correctly, the moment he begins to slide (which he admitted to doing) the play is dead.

It's hard to even tackle a sliding QB without spearing him because he's dropping right in front of your face. What do you do drop kick him

Based on the rules, what he did was a fantastic move.
The issue is we know the officials err on the side of protecting the QB, so the defense has no choice but to let up on hitting or going towards the QB if he starts a slide. So in that sense, I don't believe the QB should be allowed to fake the slide, not if the players can't smack the shite out of him before he goes down.

I'm not trying to debate it, most everyone says it was a fake slide, including the guy who did it. So that makes the number of times a fake slide has been executed in a game exactly one time. It was a slick move and entertaining. If any rule change comes about, it shouldn't be a punishment for fake sliding. They should get rid of penalizing defenders who hit sliding qbs. Or offer that protection to all players. A runner is a runner is a runner, let qbs take a pop once in awhile.

That's pretty much how I feel, treat it like a fair catch. All aspects though, including the penalties.
quote:
No Advance
ARTICLE 2. No Team B player shall carry a caught or recovered ball more
than two steps in any direction after any Team B player gives a valid or invalid
fair catch signal (A.R. 6-5-2-I-III).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul, delay of game. Five yards from the succeeding
spot [S7 and S21]
And interpretations on the protection.
quote:
III. Punt receiver B22 gives an invalid fair catch signal by a brief flick of his
upraised hand. He catches the ball at the B-35 and sprints to the B-40
where he is tackled. RULING: The ball is dead where caught. Foul for
delay of game by B22; five-yard penalty from the dead-ball spot. No foul
by the tackler, as clearly B22 gave the appearance of being a ball carrier.
First and 10 for Team B at the B-30.

and while they are at it they should change the rule with injuries so any player down with injury in the game must sit out at least 5 minutes and be medically evaluated and if he is not injured, that team will lose a time out and the player disqualified for the rest of the game
also, any coaches clearly coaching players to fake injuries will be fined in the 6 figures for it and repeated violations will disqualify them from participating in any future games that year

Seems to me like the refs should have marked him down at the spot he began the slide. Not sure a rule change is needed.
