I became aware of how special Sweetness was at a time when the game was dominated by one-note power backs.

Payton was not only a workhorse rusher, but was an excellent receiving back, and a tremendous blocker who could stay on the field all three downs.

He was the first elite combo back I ever saw.

The prevalence of the West Coast offense throughout the league eventually made those traits a standard as Roger Craig begat a Marshall Faulk who begat a Lesean McCoy etc..to where now workhorses like Adrian Peterson and Fournette are the unicorns.

Payton only played 12 years

He played 13 years

And it only took Brian Mitchel 13 season to break Payton’s career all purpose yardage

All purpose counts kick and punt returns, no? Don't think jerry did either. Not that Walter wasnt amazing, it would just make sense if the gap.

The fact Jerry rice has the record for all purpose yards, without being a kick returner, is actually more impressive

Returners get about 500 free yards a season

One of the best. I still go Jim Brown, but loved Payton ( especially in super tecmo bowl lol)

Best football in nfl history. Not the fastest, not the strongest. But no one worked as hard as he did and he never gave up on a play. The youngsters don't know this but actual played qb a little bit and started a game or two

Payton and Marcus Allen are the best all-around running backs of all-time. (and most people don't realize this).

Payton could play QB and did - so did Marcus Allen (hell, he was the QB in high school) but he threw strikes in the NFL.

Allen was actually a middle of the field threat receiving...he wasn't just some dump-off guy.

He and Barry Sanders are the two best pro runners I've seen in my life. I loved me some Sweetness. He was a tough son of a bitch too. Carried many shitty Bears teams over the years.

Ditka let The Fridge score a Super Bowl touchdown and not Payton

Running backs as proficient as Payton can gain a higher volume of all-purpose yards per year than a receiver who rarely rushes the ball like Rice especially when assessing context, not much a surprise.

Let's not forget the GOAT and Godfather Jim Brown who's also arguably the best running back of all-time

I saw Payton throw 2 TD passes against the Saints in the superdome. Great game- got to see one of the greatest of all time at his best plus a Saints overtime win.

That would be Sanders. He was the best RUNNER ever, but he could not hold Payton's or even Emmitt Smith's jock when it came to being a ALL-AROUND running back. Watching all those Barry Sanders HIGHLIGHT films does not show BLOCKING and rarely shows RECEIVING.

Emmitt Smith
get out of here with this. he played behind probably the best o line in the history of the game. he was durable, i'll give him that. in no way does he belong anywhere near the payton/sanders convo. nowhere near as good of a running back in terms of talent/speed/moves, etc. but i'm sure his mother loves him

I didn’t have any idea Payton was that much of a bad arse in that amount of time.

Mike Ditka ran Sweetness in to the ground, then let the Fridge score a TD in the SB because he thought it would be funny.
