I have no issue with this. Media members are parasites. There needs to be rules for them. Follow them or pay the consequences.
You mean like revoking the first amendment?

What LiaR is missing, this was a puff piece that made a player look good for overcomimg shyness. Imagine how keeping reporters away impacts that players NIL. And same for other players. One reason to give NIL deals is ability to bank off the press a player gets. Now its limited. NIL is a whole game changer these days. The Calebs will get their NIL but not role players unless something good happens to put in spotlight (and thats what this article did)
Another point is they struggle out there to get in the news because of all the other sports options. The press there could jjst bypass Usc and stop reporting, using time to cover other sports leaving Usc with nothing.
Whats amazing is LiaR chose this puff piece to throw weight around. When he will likely need the local press when he loses or has a rough patch. This was not the hill to stand on, he needed to save his bullets.

Its not about just this story with LiaR Riley. He has established a history of lying and underhanded moves.
He lied about the timeline leaving OU, said he made decision overnight and was on a plane to USC next morning. We all know it was months in the works
Was going to leave without addressing his players. Bob Stoops found out and made him come in and do so. But then it was heartless and less than 5 minutes.
He lied about pilphering players, he not only took QB and WR, he and his coaches reached out to existing OU players like Ethan Downs (Downs Mom still has the texts and voice message) right after he left for Usc.
He lied about his house being broken into.
He lied about threats
He lied about making good brisket
He lied saying it was impossible to recruit any better at OU (Venables is kicking his butt in recruiting)
Last year he brought in a WR from another team under suspicious circumstances
Now he is banning a reporter who did an actual feel good story not a hit piece.
His track record is getting worse. The guy has issues and is a control freak. All coaches want control thats expected but this one goes overboard.
A local beat reporter had this to say:
Parker Thune
@ParkerThune
In 2017, during an outdoor practice session, I had a video camera out on the balcony (yes, the balcony that the OU Daily would make famous in October of ‘21) for a purpose completely unrelated to football. It wasn’t even pointing out toward the practice field.
LR noticed and decided to deploy his underlings.
A support staffer yelled up to me, “THAT CAMERA NEEDS TO GO AWAY.”
I gestured to indicate that it wasn’t oriented toward the field, and was met with another booming imperative.
“THAT CAMERA NEEDS TO GO AWAY!”
I threw my hands up in confusion and annoyance.
“IT NEEDS TO GO AWAY. COMPLETELY. TAKE IT INSIDE.”
It would have been a pretty pointless battle to fight, so I just went ahead and complied.
What followed on a regular basis over the next four years has been pretty well documented. The frosting of the windows at the residence hall adjacent to the practice field remains one of the most comically neurotic measures I’ve ever seen.

I wish I could tell you how many times I received a phone call about contacting a player’s parents for a feature story without asking permission during the Riley era. It was a weekly occurrence. Just so, so dumb.
And I will never forget asking about a certain play during press conferences — like a game-winning touchdown — and always getting a “I’m not going to comment on that” when it was clear no one was asking for a complete film breakdown of the play. Ridiculous.
Just totally stupid to suspend a reporter for any of this. He’s doing his job. But as someone who covered the guy, it’s not surprising. That’s the last I’ll say on it. Just dumb, dumb, dumb.
Much of this is sour grapes.
On the other side, I believe journalists and especially independent journalists will save this country.
In this instance, USC has every right to restrict this person special access to the team (not public press conferences). If this individual wants to come to practice sessions that's different. Especially since they are a private institution.

Of course they have the right, thats not in question.
It was a feel good story and put a player (and this Usc) in a good light. If it was a hit piece at least then I could understand it.
What I laid out is a pattern of behavior and lies. This was not the time to make it his Alamo. He will learn as year goes on. When times get tough you need some on your side but many aren’t happy even if it wasn’t their outfit. Where will they stand when he hits hard times. I think that LA market will eat him alive. Fans are already seeing it.
Keep in mind having rights doesn’t always make it right.
With his lying a week ago and now this - he has more eyeballs watching him. If (when) he stumbles it could get ugly. And he had no reason to even mention OU last week, he caused that shitstorm. And now for no gain he suspends a writer. He is not very wise, even with all the money Usc threw at him.

As you can tell by my handle, I know a little bit about this stuff … no sympathy for the guy, it’s their house and their rules and if you buck them there’s consequences. I never had any issues getting what I needed working through the system, and while someone wondered why Riley would make a federal case out of this, my question is why would this dude push the envelope so hard for a fluff piece?
Also, the immediate assumption is that coaches are control freaks … they are, and megalomaniacs too … trying to control the flow of information, and I’m not going to insult your intelligence by saying there’s not some of that involved. But I have dealt with a lot of SIDs over the years, and a lot of this is trying to ensure consistently equal access to all media.
Plus too many college writers today want to end up rabble rousing on the radio like Paul F.

This
USC football is a billion dollar organization basically… anything of that size wants to flex its control over a dying industry. The media needs them more than they need the media now, even if it didn’t always used to be that way
And let’s be honest, the coach doesn’t have much say over what the athletic department and university’s media policy is. Riley is there to coach and someone else determines if media crosses the lines they draw up

We all agree that Riley is a douche, however, this reporter broke boundaries and violated the trust of the team, therefore, his suspension is warranted.

If you’re the head coach of USC you have to do some steering with your players and the media. Remember how stupid you were at 18. Now extrapolate that to where you are from and how intelligent each guy you remember from high school is. There is a curve.
What could those guys say with a mic in front of them. You always worry about bulletin board material. In California you’d worry about material getting a player cancelled or a coach or staffer if a kid spoke too openly about ANY locker room conversation.

Spurrier once called out a reporter before a media conference and told all the other reporters to follow him into another room that he wasn’t talking with that guy in it.

It’s very true… all the corporate media in the country could fold tomorrow and we’d still have college football. Teams can basically have their own media now. This isn’t politics where there’s a need to be independent

No one holds a grudge like OU fans. They will still bring up how miserable the 2003 national title. They will tell tall tales that make LSU fans sound mongols and if they were true would have caused a national conversation on fan behavior.
I saw one awhile back that said LSU fans were cowtipping handicapped OU fans in wheel chairs.

I’m not on that level, but as a credentialed prep writer, I don’t have any issue with it .
