University of Buffalo study on CTE finds it "much more rare than we thought"

CTE study actually uses RESEARCH!
Wow,how can this be????
How much you wanna bet this gets ZERO airtime on any type of national sports media
Nobody is denying CTE exist and it is a small sample size BUT can we please do more long term LEGITIMATE research like this and actually compare FB players to other non contact or other non athletes so we can get some legitimate numbers and the risks associated with playing FB vs not playing.
And yes,I realize CTE cannot be diagnosed until someone
is dead but the study was looking for early on set of dementia which is often used as evidence of CTE.

But the researchers, based on finding no evidence of early onset dementia in 21 former Bills and Sabres players, said they do not believe CTE is as dangerous as previously thought.

This is starting to get extremely convoluted and I'm a lazy frick.
Let me know when a legitimate consensus has been reached.

I don't care about cte at all. Nobody is forcing the players to make millions playing football.

Be careful. I called BS on the MSB over CTE claims, and the TD experts wanted to kill me. The mental gymnastics in this thread is about to be good.

5 pages minimum...God forbid there's actually a contrary opinion to the current narrative and "experts"
on this board.
on this board.

Im not holding my breath on a study that was based on 21 former hockey and football players

The original studies gave always been flawed. They used no control group and admitted they have no idea what CTE is. But “99 percent of ALL PLAYERS (tested) WERE POSITIVE” made a great headline

They say their evidence shows that, for some professional athletes, the risk of developing CTE is “not as great as once believed.”

The Bills and Sabres players who participated in UB’s study were not named in the papers.
Ok...so for all we know, it could have been 21 kickers.

“In time, people will begin to realize it’s an important issue, CTE exists, but it’s much more rare than we thought,” Willer said.
No objective scientist worth a damn would make a statement like this. There is no way he is in a position to say this at this time. I hope he's right though. I love watching football.

So can the Saints finally get their draft picks back?

What? He's basing on his OWN blind studies and was surprised by his own results...it's exactly what a trained scientists should say. What study SHOULD he site
when making his own conclusions?

He's basing the statement on his controll group aND nothing more...clearly a logical conclusion

Also, the study notes higher rates of sleep issues and emotional problems among contact athletes.
It used only early onset dementia as its marker, but Hillinski and Junior Seau's cases certainly imply emotional issues stemming from brain trauma also matter.
I like football, played and would play again, but there's no reason to dismiss research on negative effects of CTE. People should know the consequences as well as they can and research paves the way to helping players with CTE issues hopefully reverse damage.
This is still an evolving body of research as to mechanisms and effects. It should evolve to give more accuracy and hopefully treatment.

No objective scientist

Barry S. Willer, a UB professor of psychiatry who was lead investigator and co-author of the papers, said he started his work at UB expecting to find high rates of early onset dementia among the Bills and Sabres players.
HIs bias was pretty much opposite of what his studies proved.

Don't think anyone is doing that but they are certainly
questioning the "research" on previous CTE studies
quote:
From a scientific perspective, this represents a non-objective or biased group. For this study to be properly constructed, the experimental group of football players needs to be randomly chosen from all football players, regardless of any neurological problems. Otherwise, any observations made in the study only connect CTE to behavioral dysfunction, not necessarily football.
quote:
What this study does show is that, in a group of selected formal football players with emotional, behavioral, mood and dementia pathology, a very high proportion of them had evidence of CTE. The authors suggest that CTE may be related to prior participation in football — and it may very well be related, but this study doesn’t begin to prove it.

This study has been brought to you by university of buffalo sponsor, the national football league.

Suggesting hitting your head repeatedly for 15+ years is linked to CTE is fine. CTE is a real thing, that's not really debatable.
However, if you were questioning the sample sizes and methodology of the claims, you've got a legitimate point, and I've been saying the same thing for a while. People who donate their brain to science USUALLY think they had something wrong with their brain. Drawing sweeping conclusions from those studies is dumb.
