No Biesla will have them playing like qualifying depended on it. It won't be an easy match for Ecuador at all. Chile will go for the win.

Does anyone understand how cards from qualification carry over into the World Cup?
I'm not sure of the exact rules for CONCACAF, but generally if a player accrues two yellow cards in any phase of a given tournament then they are suspended for one match. In this case, if two yellow cards are accumulated by one player during the Hexagonal (the final round of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF), then they would be suspended for one match.
Yellow cards usually do not carry over from one phase of a tournament to the next (i.e.: group stages to knockout rounds), although it's up to the rules of the different tournaments to determine that. Yellow cards do not carry over from the different regions' World Cup qualifying tournaments to the World Cup itself.
I'm not sure about red card suspensions carrying over from one tournament to the next, though. We've got international friendlies between now and the World Cup, so if any player got a red card in the match against Costa Rica we could have them serve the suspension prior to the World Cup itself.

From the USMNT Blog
quote:
Yesterday we had this discussion about the USA's magnificent job in avoiding what could have been costly yellow cards in the last three matches. The U.S. has a boatload of players who have picked up yellow cards - as does Costa Rica - from the previous 17 matches in qualifying. Following last Saturday's matches, those accumulated cards are now meaninglesss. Only a suspension following a sending off in the final match of qualifying would carry over to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Everything else gets wiped out.

The only thing that makes sense. The qualifying and finals are two separate entities. Carrying cards over would have made dick for sense.
I'm pumped for Uruguay - Argentina on Wednesday. Will be watching it somehow from somewhere, even if I'm at work. Game starts at 4 p.m. CDT if I'm doing time-zone calculations correctly. We are UTC-6, right?

Good for them.
I'm still not impressed with Bradley just yet. A good showing in the summer might change my mind.
We'll get Spain or Brazil in our group it seems, The US always gets hard seeding.

The great thing is though that this tourney is in South Africa and non-European teams always perform better in non-Euro hosted World Cups. Another occurance in our favor is that their will be more teams with less Cup experience on their rosters compared to our squad (despite our relative average age).

When will the groups be chosen? This year?

Truth.

I like the Danes so far too, they have looked good. Young but good. They won't win or anything, but it's not always about winning.
A lot of top teams look vulnerable too, I like the chances of someone other than Brazil/France/Italy/Germany winning.

There's always bound to be one soccer flamer who decides it necessary to say that all of our players are basketball/football rejects. This is not the case.
Posted on 10/12/09 at 12:44 pm to bbap
He felt that was necessary because there is always that one idiot or two who likes to attack soccer and soccer players.
Those who open soccer threads only to attack soccer are the guys who are too insecure about themselves...

The draw for the 32-team field will take place in South Africa this December. Not sure of the exact date.

Central Time is, yes. That's 2 PM here and fortunately, I'm off Wednesday.
How bad do you think it'll get in Argentina if they miss out on WC 2010?

The players will get blamed, and the AFA. Not Maradona. Maradona is a national treasure, albeit a fat, stupid one. Blame will go on the players for not playing well and the idiots in charge who thought hiring Maradona was a good idea.
Newsflash: good players don't always make good coaches. See Maradona, van Basten, Sanchez, etc.

I just wasn't sure because of the Arshavin suspension in Euro 2008, where he missed the first two games. I'm glad that it's just the red cards that carry over though.
ETA: I think that a suspension after 2 yellow cards is way too strict, too. It should be 3 yellow cards considering they are playing in 9 games where they could be affected.

That's why it was so incredible that something like seven of our regular starters were carrying yellows and none of them picked up their second.
