The important thing is that we're in the World Cup and any jive adjective can be used to describe your emotions. Scrumtrilescent

Uruguay - Argentina on Wednesday. Biggest game of qualifying in the world.
Ecuador is at Chile, who have already qualified. Here are how they stand now.
4. Argentina 25 pts
----------------------------------------
5. Uruguay 24 pts
----------------------------------------
6. Ecuador 23 pts
There is still a reasonable enough chance that Argentina miss out on the World Cup completely.

I really hope Lugano and Uruguay win the game against Argentina and get the direct 4th spot. I also hope Chile bends over and lets Ecaudor win 1-0 to get in the playoff spot just so the Argentina Federation is despised throughout their country for their idiotic decision to hire Maradona (one of the dumbest people in the world) as their manager.
As much as I love watching Messi and the other guys, I hate everything Maradona stands for even more.

what is our current fifa ranking?
if we were to win our group, is there any way we can get a "top 8 " pod seed and not have to face a power in our group

We are 11 right now. New rankings come out on Friday. The only team ahead of us that really has NO chance is Croatia. Argentina are 8th and could drop.
We'll be borderline for that top pot.

We probably blew that chance by not winning the Confed Cup and then losing to Mexico.

We won't get a top 8, but I don't understand how FIFA does the seeding. With our FIFA rankings, we should never be in pot 3 or 4, but we always seem to be, so I guess they just use some other criteria. I think with our current ranking we should be in Pot 2 though.
Here is a list of the current teams that are qualified and their FIFA Rankings:

The US is 11th right now.

I didn't think it went by rankings, but rather by "selection" (i.e. NCAA basketball tourney). If what you said is true, then our game on Wed could be a lot more crucial than I thought. If it's selection, then I don't think they'll choose us as one of the top 8, even with our solid FIFA ranking.

Does anyone understand how cards from qualification carry over into the World Cup?
I know Arshavin got a 2-game suspension in Euro 2008 for a red card in qualifying. Is it only the reds that merit a suspension or yellows as well?
If yellows carry over, this should be the US line-up against Costa Rica.
Howard, Onyewu, Goodson, Hejduk, Spector, Bradley, Torres, Holden, Rogers, Davies, Cooper

I thought that after the top 8, it was basically random.

I hope we schedule some decent friendlies against quality competition during the spring in order see who gets the remaining spots. Also, it would be nice to see if players like Sacha Kljestan, Edgar Castillo, Jermaine Jones (if healthy and cleared), Kenny Cooper, Freddy Adu and Eddie Johnson have a shot of making the final squad, pending return to form from any of them.
