After going 0-12 last year, and an abysmal presence in FBS since getting promoted.
They're up 24-7 in Piscataway at the half. Their QB Pop Watson is 11/13 with 144 and 3 TD.

Schiano might be cooked if this holds.

After seeing the crowd tonight and at the coliseum, hard to overlook the fact that the B1G just isn't a serious football conference with reputable fanbases

My bad I should've put this in various games thread.
I see DiNardo is on the Big Ten Network at the halftime desk.

I'm trying to see if UMass has ever beaten any team that was in a "power conference" at the time of playing.
All their wins against UConn was when UConn was still I-AA or after the Big East dissolved.
2017 BYU was independent after leaving the MWC, before they joined the Big 12
They have 2 prior wins over Rutgers, one in 1973 when Rutgers was independent and one in 1967 when Rutgers was in something called the "Middle Three" conference.
They have 5 wins over Boston College - all of them were when BC was independent and 3 of them were pre-poll era.
This might actually be (if they finish the game off of course) UMass's first win over a major conference team in their history.

Man don't play six degrees of separation with WaterLink about these northeast schools! Good stuff man.
It's shaping up to be the most interesting game of the day now that you frame it like that.

Portnoy: "Let's fkn go!"
Portnoy rn: "Let's fkn no!!"
I didn't know Pop Watson played at Virginia Tech the whole time, he transferred to UMass and is from Springfield Mass so that's a cool story.
He's looking dog gone good in this game.
ETA Kicker good from 52. Minutemen up 27-7

quote:you are aware that some independents were always considered “major”? Like you would say Notre Dame isn’t a major conference win when we all know they’re a major program.

Yeah I am aware. But they're 0-1 vs ND. BYU is tricky, they were in the WAC then the MWC. Always considered one of the better mid majors, but still a mid major nonetheless. They went independent from that. Were they considered major at the time? I don't really think they were considered that by most fans.
Rutgers in 73 I really don't know, somehow I doubt they were considered major
Boston College I'll just go with the 2 wins in the poll era - 72 and 78. Was BC considered major at that point? I honestly don't know, I wasn't around. I grew up with them in the Big East and then the ACC. So I'll defer to people that followed the sport at the time about BC's rep in the CFB landscape at the time.

Bc was not good between 72-78. Decent in 71-72 then 83-84

Schiano Sunday saved the Tennessee program.

Going into the 4th, UMass should not go too conservative. Let Pop win it.

Lonergan is garbage at QB. Every pass is either a pick waiting to happen or a hospital ball that could get a receiver blown up.

Rutgers is getting out classed in every facet of the game right now
