Completely different circumstance on why he retired. Age had nothing to do with it.

Not much different than Khamzat vs. Dricus, Islam vs. JDM.

Hold a guy against the cage or on the ground as long as possible.

Wanted Garry to throw more punches, but over-commit against these guys and next thing they're holding you on the ground for the rest of the round.

Everyone has to use the Petr Yan elbows to the forearms against these guys. Or pitch a takedown shutout like Strickland vs. Khamzat.

One head kick, didn't really catch him full-on with it either. Back take wins the fight.

Yep put them on the early prelims and for sure don’t put them on a card with dags that want to dry hump people for 25 mins.

Card had some really good fights happen and then the comain was a snooze fest and the main honestly had even less action.

Why would I listen to a fat guy who has never trained.

I didn’t realize how badly Islam was outsized until post fight. Had Demian Maia not prepared Ian it would have been bad.

Oh ok, you only listen to professional MMA fighter's opinions then? He's an MMA fan, his opinion is worth the same as almost everyone in this thread. Get off your high horse.

Someone on reddit came up with a brilliant idea. Move the female fights until the very end of the card. That way we can go to sleep earlier

Yes I do.

I’ve done and competed in both striking and grappling competitions (gi and no gi,above my belt level and weight class) just not mma. I’ve always found the latter to be more exhausting and complex especially judo. So I’ll ride the horse all day

I know Garry was jovial after the fight for just being able to compete with Islam but I think k he will look back and regret being the fresher less beat up fighter at the end of the fight. I’ll never understand how you don’t leave it all out there in the 4th and especially the 5th.

He had Islam ready to fall in the 5th and still played conservative with him. He had a full gas tank, too.

He could have overwhelmed him at that point and probably broken him if he had just pushed forward and emptied the tank. Islam wouldn't hwve been able to shoot going backwards, which everyone in the stadium knew was his only plan at that point in the fightm

I don't get it at all.

That’s a very acquired skill, you have to learn how to look not only directly in front of you and everywhere else too.

Many times when the adrenaline is going you just only focus on what’s right in front of you,

Some of yall need to realize Islam as a natural 155er’ just beat the taller, larger, heavier, fighter with more reach, and younger. Ian will be a champ

Yeah but Ian is a very experienced fighter and usually a very smart fighter. He already has 12 fights in the ufc and his last 8-9 haven’t been layups. I just think when he looks back he will have to question himself why he didn’t go for it when Islam looked winded and beat up.

Props to islam he is one of the greatest to ever do it without a doubt.

Ok, so why would you listen to any of our opinions? What are you even doing here wasting your time with a bunch of untrained bums on an LSU message board?

The fat guy who never trained is right in this case. Islam held Ian against the cage for 4 minutes in the 1st round. Landed a head kick by the toes in the 2nd, then took Ian to the ground and held him there again. Got tired in the 3rd, barely got one takedown in the 4th but held Ian against the cage for another 3 minutes. But for some reason 2 of the 3 judges gave Islam the 4th even though that's when Ian bruised Islam's face up. Then taking his back and doing no damage whatsoever in the 5th is what sealed the win for Islam.

If Islam didn't get the back take in the 5th, is the fight a draw?

And if Islam is in the GOAT conversation, why did they cut Jailton Almeida? He's the king of boring fights where you hold the guy against the cage or on the ground.

Is there anyone here who will ever go back and watch this fight for entertainment? Or Islam vs. JDM, or Khamzat vs. Dricus, or Charles vs. Max for the BMF.

Look at this s***, 22 significant strikes in 25 minutes. Less than a strike per minute. Apparently Islam only landed 1 significant strike on the ground. Islam had zero significant strikes in the 5th: UFC stats

I like this idea as well, if a chick fight was the main event I could just go to bed.

No chick fight on the white house lawn. The premier event for the UFC. They know that it just doesn’t sell.

Its part of what they train for. When you perform a take down and remain in control not only are you "controlling the fight", but you're preventing your opponent from striking thus scoring point, while hopefully gassing them. (which Ian didn't seem to gas). Ian only had 29 significant strikes as well.

Sure, most will agree its a snooze fest but this is what the Khabib camp is famous for. Take downs, smothering you, gassing you, controlling the fight with grappling, and hopefully submitting you. Islam is in this camp. Hell Khabib cornered him during this fight.

While it makes for a boring fight, its part of MMA so I won't knock it as I love the sport.
I do think rules should be changed for BMF bouts. Those should be stand and bang. Maybe allow take downs and if no submission within 1 minute or so the fighters are stood back up. Olivera V Max should not have went that way, it doesn't represent the history of the belt at all.

I don't either. Its part of MMA. I thought it was a good fight.
However, it seems most people want to see a stand and bang fight. But it's like i said, that Khabib camp don't train that way, and their record as a camp speaks for itself.

Should have clarified. Underwhelming as far as guys that are interesting to me. Islam is arguably the goat but I personally am not a fan and Garry is obviously good but he's such a dork I couldn't even find myself rooting for him over a guy i don't like. Wasn't meaning it as a "this division doesn't have good fighters".

Stand and bang is more fun but it is mma, I do appreciate a good active ground game that is hunting a sub or a finish. What is a snooze fest is just holding someone making no actual active movement.

They should do a few things like judges that put less weight on control time especially if you aren’t doing any damage at all, allow for using the cage to get free and have the refs come in and break it if you are just leaning on the guy. Islam and his dag goat humpers can do that all day but would be way less effective with a few tweaks.

At the end of the day the UFC doesn’t want girl fights or dags humping people card after card, that’s how ticket prices and views go down.
