Garry was way to passive. You are the challenger. You have to take chances and fight your fight. Islam was the better strategic fighter. I was expecting more from Garry.

Not emptying the tank in round 5 was a big mistake.
As the challenger you need to win rounds pretty clean.
I could get being somewhat cautious in round 5 if it was 2-2 but only one judge had it 2-2. So who cares if you get submitted vs losing a decision.
Round 1 and 2 being somewhat passive probably works and it gassed Islam. Once gassed though Garry fricked around instead of going for it.
As the challenger you are going to have to eventually take some risk

I know Garry was jovial after the fight for just being able to compete with Islam but I think k he will look back and regret being the fresher less beat up fighter at the end of the fight. I’ll never understand how you don’t leave it all out there in the 4th and especially the 5th
I’ll never understand this either. Especially when it seemed like he could have had him badly compromised at certain times. Just empty the tank, even if you end up getting caught. You’re going to lose by decision anyway, plus you would gain a lot of praise from the fans. Let it fly.

Some of that falls on the corner. They should have been pushing him that you can’t just lay there or in his case stand there and let Islam hump your leg all round, you are down 3-1, take some chances and if he catches you then result is the same.
If you let him hump you, you lose 100 percent of the time. So you have much better odds of winning by emptying the tank and maybe you get a clean one on him, but if you don’t throw any or empty the tank then you know the result.

Islam had 3 significant strikes in the championship rounds. 3 in the 4th, 0 in the 5th.
Your point about controlling and gassing is moot considering Islam ended up gassing himself trying to do that. I mean if that's what he trained for and what the Khabib camp is famous for, and then he gasses himself out doing it, what can you say? The back take in the 5th was like a desperation heave. And that seals the win for him.
'A successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown.' It means a takedown is only supposed to score well if it leads to real offense or damage, rather than just moving a fighter to the ground. But apparently Islam only landed 1 significant strike on the ground the whole fight. If that's the criteria, then Ian arguably won the 5th considering Islam did no damage whatsoever with the back take.
And yet 2 of 3 judges gave Islam the 4th despite Ian bruising his face and Islam holding him against the cage the whole time.
Why do people make exceptions for Islam and crew? Like it or not, he just turned in 2 of the most boring welterweight fights ever. Again, why was Jailton Almeida cut then, if what Islam just did is considered MMA brilliance?
Many ragged on Dern vs. Robertson, but there were actually more significant strikes and more action in that fight.

I don't understand all the bitching and moaning. That fight wasn't bad at all

Losing the first two rounds (the first was arguably a 10-8 round) is not a good strategy

No one is. I was simply trying to imply the way he went about this bout shouldn't surprise anyone because its what those guys are known for. And whether we like or dislike that style of fighting is subjective because the rules today allow for it as long as their is meaningful action which apparently Herb Dean saw. I won't pretend to be more knowledgeable or have better judgement than him.
Trust me, I wanted Garry to use his height and reach advantage to beat the shyt out of Islam, but it didn't happen.

Correct. I already said Ian didn't seem gassed. In fact, Islam seemed so by the 3rd and 4th rounds. Sometimes plans don't work.
Its why I think had Ian came out stronger and less cautious in those rounds he may have won.
IMO rematch today, i think Ian wins.

As long as he wants to give Islam a kiss and a hug at the end of every round, he's not winning.
If it wasn't for the one kick from Islam, that goes down as one of the worst title fights of the year.

It's a fight. So damage should be by far the most important metric. Other metrics should be used when damage is close for both fighters. We get fewer hug fests and better fights.
Sure, control and takedowns are impressive, but without damage, who fricking cares?
