USC is far from fine financially. It’s the reason why the couldn’t fire Helton this year.

Just ignore. Why he thinks being in a good or bad part of town is important is a mystery.

Is there a breakdown on recruiting expenses/budgets? Easy to assume that they are extremely small in comparison, which would also ripple down to their won/loss records. Nick's budget for Dodge Charger costs alone probably is more than any other part of UCLA's budgets.

We hired guys like Curly Hallman and Gerry Dinardo. We paid assistant coaches just a little more than high school coaches.

Players lived in dorms and ate in cafeterias that may have been a little nicer than the average student, but not that much nicer. They rode buses to games instead of flew. The athletic department had a student intern handling the audiovisuals instead of a professional staff. The head trainer was some ole baw who learned on the job instead of a guy with a doctorate and salary to match. If they lifted weights at all it was in a cinderblock room deep inside the stadium instead of a fully equipped state of the art gym.

Yeah...this isn't Boyz N' the Hood - 1980's anymore.

USC bought up all the crap parts that were encircling the campus and basically expanded their campus.

Have you seen the USC Village?

UCLA?

UCLA was declared the Most Dangerous College Campus in America 6 years ago using FBI and police stats. The entire campus is dimly lit, they think they're safe, and just a campus security force.

While the LAPD patrols USC.

Men's soccer, M/W water polo, and rowing are their extra teams. Not bringing in any money but not exactly huge spenders. Ucla is cheap with facilities so that probably covers those 4 programs alone.

UCLA's water polo coach was making $250,000 a year.

USC's water polo coach was probably making a lot more a year considering he was coaching both the Men's and Women's and winning more National Titles (he won 16).

You take all those little sports - couple them with their female equivalent, add-in all the assistant coaches, free tuition, travel, food, lodging.

Shite adds up to support a full Olympic slate. I mean the only Olympic sport Pac schools aren't funding is the Half-Pipe. They already have Beach Volleyball.

First loss since 2004

Welcome to the LA Rams! That haven't shown any improvement to the LA area. Stan Kroenke thought that Moving to LA would generate more money to a larger crowd but that larger crowd never did happened and that is also pulling down the other sports in LA. High cost of living and no interest in sports have turned sour so far for the LA area. I was right all along that Rams move to LA made things worst for college sports in LA. I am curious how will Rams deal with the lost of fan base that never really wanted the Rams in LA. Should have stayed in St. Louis and get the stadium built for a lot cheaper and make more money than in LA. Too many sports in LA isn't a good idea when most want to do other things that cost less and/or more fun.

Also don’t forget the product sucks in terms of the only two sports that make money: football and men’s basketball.

This is why they are losing money

How did athletics departments balance the books when the tv contracts weren’t so massive?

The players were not as well compensated. The facilities weren’t as good, nutrition programs, tutoring, etc.

In other words, the revenue has been reinvested in the programs and players.

Here the problem with the argument about UCLA having so many women and olympic sports, Cal has 14 more sports than UCLA does at the Varsity level, per the article. So Why isn't Cal broke?

22 UCLA Varsity teams
36 Cal varsity teams

USC has what they call the perimeter. If you are inside of it you are as safe as anywhere else. They have free Lyft for their students at certain hours as well. And while next to skid row they are also almost next to downtown and all the new development there.

https://dps.usc.edu/patrol/

It can go overboard. When my son's fraternity has a party they can be required to hire as many as 20 security personnel.

The problems for a public university like UCLA are the same as anywhere but amplified. Politics creep in, A lot of costs are there in too many administrative jobs for connected people. UCLA has over a dozen assistant athletic directors. When there are new facilities built the process is more expensive in Cali than anywhere in the country. The biggest problem though is the mismanagement of the Pac 12.

Which courts were on Vermont? The Tennis courts by the baseball stadium? In any event a crime in 2014 led to the new perimeter that pushes out blocks past Vermont and actually increased real estate values on some once crappy crime-ridden streets. USC DPS has over 300 security officers who patrol 24/7. I have walked around the campus and nearby the last few years and felt safer there than some areas near Tulane at night.

Title IX is killing them financially

I feel sorry for kids that are good in other sports. Football takes all the men’s scholarships. Female “athletes” have it made. The same people who fight for title IX now tell us there are no genders.
