It had nothing to do with a share of the Birmingham market. That’s nil compared to Alabama or even Auburn.

What happened was a outside firm that put together a bullshite report that shutting down several sports would stave off financial difficulties for the athletic department. Turns out that was wrong. But then President Watts went with it. Probably from pressure from the BOT who ultimately see UAB as the medical school and belief that should be its sole focus.

In the end it became a blessing in disguise and the support grew and they finally got a new facility. A win for UAB football and the city of Birmingham.

I'm happy for UAB and the City. The new stadium is also actually near other things to do, so that will be a big plus for the Birmingham Bowl.

Hopefully Birmingham has a development plan for around the stadium. You cant put a plan like that in place until the stadium is built. Now, with the stadium open, maybe the demand for hotels, bars and restaurants will help develop the area around the stadium and become an area people want to socialize at. All i know, is that i wouldn't happen otherwise. Good first positive step for both the football program and the city of Birmingham!!

I would expect it to grow much like the area around Regions Park.

There is a small section of decent restaurants and bars called Uptown that is walking distance. Also a Top Golf very close

Cautiously optimistic about the "Birmingham City Walk" LINK

There is quite a bit around that was already built before the stadium. The area around the stadium is called "Uptown" and includes the BJCC (which hosts all sorts of events and concerts), the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Topgolf, and numerous restaurants. The SEC Headquarters is also in Uptown.

Sounds like a good start!! With the CC, Top Golf and Uptown right across the street, hopefully this makes the Birmingham Bowl a better overall experience.

It's crazy to think how not really all that long ago, that's where Bama would always play their "big games."

surprised no teams have tried to steal him away from UAB

A lot of it is he would be a hard sell to boosters. His offense isn't exciting, he doesn't have scalps of P5 teams, he just has a solid front 7 on D, and a good Oline and RB. His formula mated with their additional years has just worked out perfectly. He was able to recruit guys who needed time to develop and did during their shutdown and eligibility freeze, and was able to capitalize and win and recruit better guys in the trenches. His scheme is perfect against teams in CUSA, control the clock and force teams to out of the extended handoff offense into mid to deep routes that allow his defense to hit home and force errors.

Need a few more truckloads of federal infrastructure stimulus before feasibility studies and minority bidding can begin.

Tl/dr... Legion Field will stay until it collapses into a sinkhole, or is covered by lava from the nearby Red Mountain volcano.

Oh, I know. Mine was more just a comment on how much the dynamics of these things have changed.

Even if it was in a nice area of town and they had kept it up, it would be crazy to think that Bama would regularly be playing their big games 60 miles from their campus.

Alabama last played multiple games at Legion Field in 2001. That was UTEP and Southern Miss. The last conference game at Legion Field was Vanderbilt in 2000. The last game at Legion Field was South Florida in 2003.

There’s a certain amount of nostalgia for Legion Field if you’re a certain age, but it was past time to move on from playing games there. Had the city kept the stadium up to date and the surrounding neighborhoods not become so bad, it would be interesting to have played a game there once in a while.

Great addition and they did a really good job with it. If UAB will play like 2-3 of their home games on thursday or friday night going forward, I bet they will get a good atmosphere. I know a lot of people that would go, but obviously wouldn't go on a saturday.

We are excited. Going to be one of the better locals to visit for the AAC.

Already have it. Uptown has 4-5 restaurants with most of them having a bar section as well. It is across the street from the stadium. Top Golf is on the other side of the stadium as well. That area probably needs another one or two bars to be perfect for what it is.

As an AU grad with zero ties to UAB, I’d absolutely go to Thursday or Friday night games and support the Blazers.

I wanted to go this weekend, but it’s too close to AU-LSU kick.

I’m excited for the future of Uptown.
