You don’t want anything in your entire god***n life as much as ESPN desperately wants you to give a shite about the WNBA. You could have the Super Bowl, Masters, and Kentucky Derby on the same day and their top story would be a fricking WNBA trade rumor.

I noticed this a long time ago.
Espn goes above and beyond to promote women's sports on their Frontpage and in some cases they'll mask an article headline so you don't even know if it's women or men's basically forcing you to click on it to know.
They'll also use just the last names of women athletes as if everyone is supposed to know who they are.
Headline: "Smith signs 5-year extension with Philly"
Actual article: "Top WNBA point guard Jamika Smith signs 5-year extension"
Eta: And espn even goes further than this, as you scroll down the homepage you can see their different sections rotate between men's and women's sports.
Everything must be created within the "equity" agenda, even something as insignificant as a sports media website homepage. The dogma must be enforced everywhere at all times.

A great example of how big corporations are more than willing to put political and social agendas ahead of profits.
Their aggressive pushing of women's sports obviously hurts ratings, it makes people less likely to watch, not more.
How can you effectively run a business when you go out of your way to drive off customers?

Yup. And somebody will use this to claim that interest in women’s sports is growing. Trick clicks.

Super 70’s Sports is a good follow. He regurgitates things, but this is dead on.

Was just commenting on this to someone yesterday. Nobody gives a flying motherfrick about the WNBA. The much bigger story for me to watch is how embarrassingly desperate ESPN are for anyone whatsoever to to follow it in some way. That’s much more entertaining.

to be fair, espn wanted to rid themselves of wnba.
in last nba contract, nba forced espn to continue showing and putting like 20 mil into the sport. no wnba, no nba contract, and others get a chance to bid it. no first right of refusal.
on this, espn didnt have much of a choice.

Then eat the loss, and stop trying to convince everyone that it’s worth their time.

They shove it down your throat especially Brittney Griners dunk that looked like she laid it in.

I have never watched a single WNBA game in my life.
But I do enjoy watching videos of them missing uncontested layups in front of empty arenas.

Local news had about like a five minute segment Friday afternoon on the WNBA All-star game Houston doesnt even have an WNBA team but there was a solid five minute segment on all the festivities around the game of course this was the ABC station which was owned by Disney and owns ESPN

If the WNBA wants any chance to survive they just need to lower the goals to 8.5 or 9 feet so players could posterize each other. I would probably watch.

It’s not all ESPN’s fault
“Woke” advertisers are apparently asking for more women sports coverage.
I don’t see how this is a good use of advertising dollars and think the trend will die out

Even star wars content is obsessive about putting women front and center in the dialogue, story, scenery, credits, premiere interview, etc.
I think this shite is happening because the United Nations put out reports that "improving" the lives of women improves the country. So western leftwingers, who are obsessively globalist/Euro-centric have dove head first into this cause.
quote:
The UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres has stated that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the greatest human rights challenge in our world.
quote:
Within the UN’s first year, the Economic and Social Council established its Commission on the Status of Women, as the principal global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women. Among its earliest accomplishments was ensuring gender neutral language in the draft Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
quote:
Stark gender disparities remain in economic and political realms. While there has been some progress over the decades, on average women in the labour market still earn 20 per cent less than men globally. As of 2021, only 25 per cent of all national parliamentarians were female, a slow rise from 11.3 per cent in 1995.
You can trace a lot of these feminist talking points back to the UN in most cases, as in the UN is the authority giving them the validity.

Best line I ever heard about the WNBA:
If I wanted to see a bunch of missed layups, I'd go watch a local YMCA pickup game.

I think in this case, it's ESPN trying to increase revenues under the belief that more exposure will lead to more fans.
ESPN is stuck with the WNBA as a condition of having NBA on ESPN, so they're trying to turn that sunk cost into a breakeven endeavor. The equity stuff is biting them a bit by making the WNBA prohibitively expensive for its popularity.

A couple of weeks ago they were running about 4 separate items on their ticker about Brit Griner being harassed at an airport.

Posted on 7/16/23 at 12:59 pm to Me
During the CWS, their ticker seemed to contain more WNBA stuff than MLB and the other major sports (off-season news) combined.

Check the Nielsen ratings for the WNBA… they usually average between 3,000-8,000 total live viewers per game. There have even been games that drew less than 1,000 live viewers.
