The parents kid is on team A.

Here is what happened:

Team A is the home team and winning. They just got the third out and are about to bat. There is 3 minutes left in the game. Team A coach tells his first three batters DO NOT swing at any pitch. First kid ends up striking out but it took 2 minutes. The parents kid is up to bat and after taking 2 balls, looks at two great strikes and doesn't swing like his coach told him not too. The parents flip out. Next pitch is a ball and time expires. Ball game is over and team A won. I was the home plate umpire

I think it was a great call by the coach. What says the MSB parents?

Maybe I'm just out of touch, but a time limit in travel baseball? Never knew such a thing existed.

I might take one strike but not swinging at all is pretty shitty. It's youth baseball and not the freaking World Series.

It was 11 AA and had a 90 minute time limit, but you have to finish the inning if the home team is losing and obviously no ties, because it was bracket play today.

Even if hypothetically all the kids swing and are out in the first pitch there is no way you could start a new inning in 3 minutes, I don't understand the strategy....unless I'm missing something

Did he say this out loud for people in the stands to hear? If so, that was a mistake.

I've told kids to take until you get a strike in similar situations, but not to just sit out the at bat.

Growing up, that happened a few times in tournaments I played in. They're just pissed they lost. If the pitcher pipes 3 fastballs in a row to each batter, the plan backfires. But travel ball is serious shite

In bracket play, at least around here, you play all 90 minutes, until the clock hits 0:00. So, if that third out is made and there is 20 seconds left, you start a new inning.

The coaches strategy that was it highly unlikely that an 11 year old would throw 9 strikes in less than 3 minutes.

No, he whispered it to his first three batters in front of his dugout/where some parents were sitting.

Coach probably went home thinking he is the Sparky Anderson of 11 year old travel ball.

Ah ya that makes a difference. Even still I would think there's a better way that would allow the kids to still play. Taking an extra pitch, take their time walking up to the plate etc.

Opposing pitcher should've started beaning batters

If he couldn't even hit the strike zone without a bat to worry about, I doubt he could hit batters.

I think the concept of travel ball stinks.

But the obviously analogy to this situation to me is a football team taking a knee to run out the clock. The team isn't trying to score or gain yardage. How's that different from telling players to take till they get two strikes to let the clock run out in baseball?

Because football is a timed sport; baseball isn't. It's only timed in this case for administrative reasons.
Play the game.

The contest they were playing that day was timed. Both coaches knew it before it started. The winning coach was playing by the rules.

I agree that's not normally how it's played But in this case it was...so strategy was legit.
