Not a good statement about where the game is at today, it seems.

Well he forgot a pretty big component: turnover.

Most staffs are in constant churn. The players are turning over. You rarely see teams stash a guy for 2-3 years then start. Its now or never.

Don’t forget rookie contracts… you stash a guy and he won’t re-sign if he thinks you wasted a year or two of his career

Idk how guys accepted that in the past when coaches were messing with their money

I remember when Carson Palmer signed a six-year contract worth $42. mil and he sat on the bench for a year, didn't play a down behind Jon Kitna.

He's old. Of course he's full of "back in my day" shite. Drafting and developing QBs is the same crapshoot it always has been.

Yes and no. His point about development - Bo Nix transferred. Jayden Daniels transferred. Penix transferred. Caleb Williams even though he stayed with Riley. The game is different now, development is staggered by turnover and the NFL suffers because they simplify the plays for rookie QBs who have to play.

He's not wrong about how a QB needs to be developed. At the same time a guy like CJ Stroud comes in and plays awesome as a rookie and so it's not a one size fits all thing.

Imagine what stroud could do with some actual development and years behind his athleticism. Thats part of Tom’s point

The idea that it suffers would hold water if back in the day guys staying in the same system in college and waiting to take over the starting job in the NFL meant they had a higher success rate, they didn't though.

By far the bigger issue is the economics from the CBA. Coaching turnover at the assistant levels has always been pretty churny.

That's fair but again look at a guy like Aikman. He played as a rookie and got his teeth kicked in but went on to win 3 SB's.

Peyton would have a few of Tom's rings if he had some actual development
