Two great Rickey Henderson stories that involve $$$ - the Yankees gave him $1 million signing bonus and he framed the check. A few months later, the accounting department calls him asking him to cash the check….it was messing up the bookkeeping by having a $1 million check out there.
The other thing is he would take the per diem money the club would give him for road trips and stick them in a shoebox in his closet. Whenever one of his kids brought home a good report card, made a sports team, etc. he would let them pick an envelope of cash out of the box

I don’t think people who didn’t see him play appreciate what he did to defenses on the base paths. You knew he was going to steal, he took gigantic leads but you couldn’t pick him off and couldn’t throw him out and he was doing this until he was 40 years old. He could ruin an Ace’s night and wreck the game in 2 ABs without anything more than a walk. The pressure he put on the battery and defense will never be seen again. And that’s not even taking into account the tedious ABs, hitting ability and power he brought to the table. If you’re choosing an alltime lineup he’s your lead off guy without question. A true baseball icon.

Looks like it’s true, getting confirmation from more solid news sources. Pneumonia apparently.
He wasn’t the best player ever but if I could pick any player in history to start a team with it would be Rickey, because he could beat your arse so many different ways.

What’s crazy is that 10 minutes ago, I was looking through some baseball cards that I had as a kid that I’m gonna give to my son. I’m sitting here looking through values of all these cards. (Henderson was my favorite player to collect at his age). Get on the internet and see this. Crazy.

They always describe Rickey as MLB all time steals leader and rarely as MLB all time runs scorer.
