The athletic department is paying $20.5M to the students DIRECTLY? I thought this was illegal.

Nope. Not anymore. Starting in July each school can spend up to $20.5M direct to student-athletes.

agree about Miami but they’ve made it work anyway. None of the below is news to you as a buff grad but:

-CU is the state flagship university
-Boulder is an incredible place to learn/live/work
-CU campus is beautiful
-Folsom Field is a fantastic stadium
-wealthy potential donors abound
-they are Denver’s college football team also, even more money and interest there
-Denver area recruiting is right there

they have everything you want to build a respectable program, a real sleeping giant. Miami is a private commuter school that barely exists in the community except for sports. CU is way more than that

Outside of Cherry Creek, Denver doesn't really have much in the way of high school powerhouses. It's not a talent hotbed.

Bill McCartney built his legacy with players from Southern California and Lousiana playing a big part but that's a tough pull these days and back then partial qualifiers were a thing.

The campus is fantastic and Folsom field is a great venue and it was very nice for me going from the trek to the Orange Bowl to an on-campus stadium but they call it the People's Republic of Boulder for a reason and the Broncos will always be king of the metro area.

A lot of high profile current and former pro ball players were all over campus during the games.

Probably a lot paid to be there by Colorado…

It's almost like their AD admitted when they hired Deion they didn't have the money for his full salary (and that was before the raise and extension).

Is there governor going to go on a national media tour to talk about this?

He just did
quote:

On the heels of the Thanksgiving holiday, Governor Jared Polis announced the state’s cost-saving initiatives to reduce how much Colorado is spending.

The executive order suspends specific programs and services to the Department of Higher Education, and many other departments. “You know we’re talking about this years ago, saying we can’t make all these promises and grow these programs because we are not going to have the money, we’ll eventually because eventually is now. So I do think there has to be adjustments and cuts to certain departments in order to get to the numbers we need to."

The University of Colorado’s athletic department is predicting a $27 million deficit for the fiscal year. And since $14 million of the deficit came from institutional support and student fees, the Buffs will need to find revenue somewhere to make up the difference. However, the usual suspects for increasing revenue will not be the answer.

The athletic department is hoping for additional revenue from donations, business sponsorship, as well as concerts held at Folsom Field. Contributions to the 'buff club' and a Tyler Childers featuring Jon Batiste concert in July might not be enough to close the gap. The first domino to fall was the announcement that athletic director Rick George is stepping down as athletic director. University spokesman Steve Hulbert also confirmed tuition money and state funds will not be available to address the deficit.

I'm no math wizard, but they have a 27M deficit with only 30M in payments to Sanders and players combined? They only made 3M?

I guarantee if you take football out of their budget that deficit is either at or above 100 million

CU football program only turned a profit of $8 Million last year, that was before Sander's salary increase.

They are getting railroaded if they’re paying $20.5 million on top of $10 million to Deion with those kind of results
