The only difference is that there is the added element of human error in college football. We have a committee choosing who they THINK are the best 4 teams in college football.

Do we need 12 teams or whatever they’re proposing? Probably not but at minimum all power 5 conference champions should earn a spot in a playoff. Then sprinkle in a couple wildcards maybe.

They only won 87 games, finished 3rd in their 5 team division, they weren’t even the classic “hot down the stretch” team

Yep my lowly Cubbies swept them with about a week and some change left in the season and only the Brewers being even more inept than the Phillies down the stretch allowed them to make the playoffs.

The Dodgers got swept by the Pirates this year, in LA

Cubs swept Phillies home and away this year....look, I've seen teams with worse records advance even before playoff expansion. The Cards finished 83-78 in 2006 and won the WS.

But the Phils sure linped into the playoffs no doubt, I was pulling for them in every series they won though.

No I’m arguing for the regular season to matter.

Baseball regular season sucks.
Baseball playoffs are legit.

For your take to actually make sense, why not go back to only 2 teams in playoffs and play a 9 game series? Winner of NL vs winner of AL? Or why have playoffs at all? Why is 4 the magic number for you?

Sign me up.

We’re so conditioned to think these huge playoff systems make sense. They don’t. But they sure do make money.

30 teams played for 6 months and that narrowed it down to 12 lol. The other sports are even worse with 16 or 14.

The response is always that the regular season is boring but If the regular season actually narrowed the field down more it would be more exciting. and that excitement would last longer than a month. The Premier League and F1 are proof you can be wildly successful financially without these random champion generators we use in America.

yeah they should do away with the playoffs and grant the championship to whoever has the most wins/points after the regular season

Doesn't Euro Soccer do something weird like that?

I was just saying this to a fellow acquaintance. You want to go to the postseason, then don’t finish 10+ games out of first.

So you need to win your division in order to make the playoffs? that would be 3v3 playoffs, how would that work? Two teams automatically make the championship and the other 4 teams are automatically in the championship series? Seems utterly stupid, the season would effectively end for 90% of teams in July/August

ETA: maybe, if a team has so many wins, they shouldnt lose at home in the playoffs? have you considered this?

I don’t follow soccer so not real familiar with the EPL but from what I recall I do like their system remind me of the particulars. Is it just the regular season top team?

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, you play everyone twice. It’s absolutely more reflective of the team who was consistently the best.

The biggest issue is that sometimes the champion is determined well over a month or so in advance. That’s why they need to have teams competing for champions league and to avoid relegation to keep it exciting.

Cards won 93 games, the Central, and still had to play in the WC series. If anyone has gripe about this, it’s them. Rob Manfred has done more harm to the sport than Selig did in his tenure

So get rid of divisions.

They should also reseed like the NBA does based on record.

Is this something new? I don't remember the NBA reseeding the teams in the playoffs. Once the bracket is set it is fixed.

So leave out two division winners?

Plus you're comparing apples to oranges, MLB is much different than college football

they aren't, nor have they ever, chosen who they think is "best". They choose who is most deserving based on resume. They have every year.

Regular season DOES matter. It's what gets you into the playoffs. If you dominate the regular season, but have a weakness that gets exposed in the playoffs by a 90 win team, then the team is not an all time great team.

This

The problem with college football is that 12 guys in a room determine who is the best four in the country instead of a system that determines it on the field. Subjective vs objective. Imo if you win your conference you deserve a shot to play for the title, even if on paper you should be blown out by the other conference champ.

We may have expanded too much in the MLB but if you want 4 get rid of divisions. Division winners should be rewarded even if they don’t have the best record.

Finally when it comes to entertainment college football has gotten boring. Same teams every year competing with maybe one exception, and the games are not usually competitive. MLB on the other hand has parity in the post season, much more entertaining than the same teams over and over again in CFB.
