Generally speaking teams that win more games over the course of a season are the better teams. With few rare exceptions there is no definitive “best” team. This will vary by sport of course. In pro sports they are more or less playing similar schedules and the gap from the top to bottom teams is much smaller than in college sports. Perhaps a better way to say it more deserving? But I feel it’s pretty safe to say a team that wins 101 out of 162 games is better than a team that wins 87 of 162 especially when those teams are in the same division and playing basically the same schedule. What most people don’t understand is that being better in most context isn’t 100%. The Phillies are a good team and given the nature of baseball anyone can beat anyone on a given day. In CFB there’s zero percent chance Southern could beat LSU, but in baseball they occasionally can. Coastal Carolina could never win the FB NC but they did win the CWS. So that they Phillies beat the Braves 3 out of 5 doesn’t make them “better”. They won under the rules in place so good for them.

All I’m saying is I prefer to reward the teams that won more aka as being better over the course of a season rather than wide open expansive playoffs that reward luck more than being consistently good

It does devalue the regular season which is dumb but overall it makes for a better October product which is better for the game

I have no real issue with it. Just wish baseball seeded its teams better

Finally a reasonable counter point.

The seeding last year was especially retarded with the Giants and Dodgers playing in the DS after they won 107 and 106. The Phillies played St L who won their division but had the 4th best record in the NL then the Braves 2nd At the very least as the 6 they should have played the Mets and then the Dodgers but for sure the 6 should have played the 1.

So you are saying you cannot give a TRUE DEFINITION OF BEST TEAM then and your thread is pointless in its premise. It is however not pointless in posting as it allows for discussion, which seems you want to have and are okay with differing opinions.

No I’m saying no one can, because the vast majority of the time there is no definitive “best” team it’s SUBJECTIVE. Most years there will be a handful of teams at the top, (the quality of those teams will vary from year to year)that are better than their respective league avg and are more or less equal. so we take those teams and have a tournament to crown a champion. If can not see that some teams are better than other’s based on certain criteria like record, watching them play certain metrics etc then I can’t help you.

the point of this thread is to argue in favor of smaller playoff fields in order to reward the teams that were better over the course of the regular season. Which teams are “better” is based on overall record in pro sports, and overall record adjusted for level of competition in college sports. It’s not that complicated

The Phillies are exactly why we need a 12 team CFB playoff

Agreed

But baseball is way differnt. They had 162 to games to win their division or be the next best. 6 teams is beyond ridiculous in baseball with as long as the season is

Just playing devil's advocate here. What if a team just plays in a shite division and gets to pile up a bunch of wins?

Conversely, what if a team is just in a stacked division? Philadelphia finished third in their division to two 100+ win teams. Third place team in the AL West didn't even finish with a winning record.

Point is maybe the regular season records don't tell us everything. Some teams may simply have the depth to grind out a great regular season record but not top-end pitching and hitting to dominate equally in the post-season.

We see something similar in the NBA where deep teams can rack up a bunch of regular season wins, but they don't have the elite top-end talent to excel when rotations shorten in the playoffs.

a 162 game marathon usually does a pretty good job at allowing the best teams to rise to the top

If you are talking about a difference couple of games (+/- 4-5 games) maybe that would be true. also if they were close to .500 vs the Braves and Mets that would be one thing but a quick glance it looks like those teams especially the Mets dominated them because the Mets were much better. And they also got just as many games vs Washington and Miami who were awful. Over 162 games in a sport where anyone can beat anyone the teams with the best records are pretty clearly the best teams.
