Pretty much the only way to recover one under the new 2018 rules is if the receiving team completely screws up. (See falcons v cowboys)

There has to be some chance of the kicking team recovering the ball or it's just pointless.

Good. If you're down by 2 or 3 scores with a couple minutes left you don't deserve to win.

The onside kick definitely needs to be fixed.

Even if you get it, you still have to stop the other team

Is it college or pro where you have the option to keep the ball instead of kicking but its 4 down and 10?

Can all the rules revert back 20 years and refs simply fix games for Vegas instead of for Goodell and McKay.

Nobody is advocating it being an easy thing to do, but it needs to be decently possible to keep the drama going in the game.

I think historically the success rate is about 10%, which seems fair to me.

With the various rule changes it's probably way less than that now.

so you're really advocating for contrived drama. the onside kick is arbitrary nonsense already. why 10 yds? why not 11 or 9 or 17?

The list of things the NFL needs to fix starts off with the NFC East.

No it doesn’t. If you getting beat all game, why make it easier to come back at the end?

It’s like making all scores worth double in the final two minutes

Pretty sure TDs and FGs still hold the same value

Why is it 10 yards for a first down? Why not 11 or 9 or 17?

Because we've been using a base-10 number system for almost all of human history.

No, it's not. The onside kick rule doesn't change all of a sudden near the end of the game. You're not necessarily making it easier to come back at the end. You're giving teams more realistic strategic options to use throughout the game.

Here's a radical idea: have the clock stop after every play with under 1:00 left in the game.

Make teams get first downs to run out the clock...

Every time the NFL "fixes" something it, invariably, gets worse. They fixed what was not broken in 2018, and now we see the ridiculous nature of the "fix." They will address it at some point and make it WORSE.

No governing body ever simply reverts back when they realize they have ruined something. It is not how governing bodies, especially with unelected bureaucrats running things, operate. They design systems to break down so that they can have the authority to repair it, or recreate it, thus giving themselves more control and a reason to exist.

I do wonder if NFL rosters got expanded beyond 53 players, if teams would start focusing on a niche of kicker that only does onside kicks as a specialty, sort of like the development of the longsnapper.

So the game is over at the 57-58 minute mark then? If the leading team can’t hold a multi-score lead with minutes left, they also don’t deserve to win.

It’s a 60 minute game and every second counts. Just ask the Dirty Birds
