I kind of agree with you, the game probably benefits from a couple of celebrity stars
The reality is I'll pull for someone like Scottie over Rory most likely, but arguably that adds some intrigue that Scottie vs Rahm just won't really generate.
The problem is when we as much focus on not in contention celebrity golfer when someone like Scheffler is dominating. But that's never really been a huge issue outside of Tiger, and it's hard to complain about Tiger getting too much coverage (even when he objectively is).

The brightest stars in the history of the game have been characters. And I think that's probably true of all sports. Stars are what elevate your sport. The NBA needed magic and Bird, Jordan etc. MLB needed Sosa and McGwire. And of course Tiger made every golfer on tour rich beyond their wildest dreams. If there isn't that 1 or 2 guys at the top of the mountain that make outsiders pay attention, the whole sport struggles.

Yeah, Tiger was a celebrity because his ability was so dominant that he transcended sport, even before he was “interesting” off the course. I’ll be interested to see how much coverage the celeb LIV golfers get if they’re not in contention (Phil/DJ/Brooks). I’m guessing not much, and Phil has always been a guy who soaks up coverage even when he’s way out of it.

I love him personally as I enjoy those with personality. Was bummed with how St. Andrews played out after he was playing so well, so I’d be more than happy with him winning at Augusta.
My top allegiance will always be with Tiger when he’s playing though.

The betting options are absurd. I'm sure it's like this on every app, but DK in particular has winner, top 5, top 10, top 30, top 40, round finishing position, winner without McIlroy and Scheffler, winner without those two and Rahm, winner without those three and Spieth, hole winner out of threesomes, hole score out of threesomes, top lefty, top former winner, a bunch of head-to-heads, and the most interesting to me is field at -280 vs Scheffler/McIlroy/Rahm +190. What do you degenerates have going on out there?
