agree about honoring the contract but a competent GM would’ve done everything to keep Pippen happy. Pippen @ $2.8 million is absurd
Exactly. It would behoove the organization to properly pay one of the greats of the game in order to maintain a healthy winning culture.
1.Unfortunately for Scottie, I don't think Krause ever viewed him as truly one of the best players in the league.
2.MJ was so dam good that a team could overcome a toxic culture within an organization.
3. All parties are to blame as egos obviously ran high. From Krause's hard on to break up the team, Scottie's childish behavior, to even Reinsdorf unwillingness to ever renegotiate all were major contributors to the disfunction.

quote:I agree. You want to keep your players happy so you can re-sign them or entice others to sign with your team if they know you take care of the players.
You throw the guy a fricking bone.
However, on the flip side, players would never give money back to the team when they underperform. Teams get burned all the time.

He just took after MJ, who had been taking pot shots at Krause. Why do superstar athletes need to belittle this ugly, frumpy fat guy?
Because the ugly, frumpy fat guy wanted all the credit for the team winning and was jealous that the players and coach received the most credit. Pippen’s contract alone gave him enough reason to despise his bosses. Pippen was voted a NBA All Time Top 50 player and he was paid like a reserve player.

I just pulled up an old article from 1999 about when the Bulls traded Pippen to the Rockets.
quote:
Scottie Pippen will be re-signed by the Bulls to a staggering 5 year contract that could be worth as much as $82 million with incentives, and subsequently traded to the Rockets for forward Roy Rogers and a second round draft pick.
Don't adjust your monitors because I said that right -- Roy Rogers and a second round draft pick.
Nothing else.
I almost choked on my Frosted Mini-Wheats when I read that. It doesn't seem possible, but believe it -- it's reality. One can only assume that:
1) Jerry Krause and the Bulls wanted to clear as much cap room as physically possible.
2) They were informed by Pippen that he was going to leave anyhow.
3) Other offers weren't enough for Krause or they wouldn't have pleased Scottie.
4) The Chicago Jerrys are still passed out from the Michael Jordan retirement party and have absolutely no idea what they've done.

While true, the particular situation involved one of the top 5-10 players in the league. It wasn't like Pippen was an average starter in the league. There's a hierarchy and the best at their craft are usually allowed allowances that others wouldn't get.

Krause was the 90s NBA version of Joe Alleva

He clearly seemed talented at identifying talent and building a roster
He just had absolutely no people skills and didn't realize that was a major part of his job. Hes lucky that he was a gm then, and not now, cause today's MJ would not have stayed with the bulls his whole career if Krause was the head executive
I don't disagree with any of this. I just think everyone involved had some culpability in the breakup and this documentary is predictably laying all of it at Krause's feet. And it's an easy narrative to sell; the good looking NBA megastar is viewed as right and the ugly short fat guy is wrong.
The reality is you're not going to keep a team together for that long without some animosity building up. It was just time for them to break up.

Finally got his money, probably could've gotten more had he not played the Finals ON A BAD BACK

Like I said, I do think he was jealous and deserves some blame but everyone's making him out to be the devil despite seeing MJ and Pippen treat the guy like shite. Why are people excusing their poor behavior?
Antonio Brown called his GM a cracker and got suspended. These guys berated Krause and nothing happened to them, he's supposed to just take that? The dude is human.

Pippen's agent failed him there. Hpw is that Krause's fault?

Also the guy without the ability to defend himself. He’s an easy target. I don’t understand the personal animosity that led to all of the name calling and such by Jordan and Pippen. The guy was looking out for the Bulls the best way he knew how. As far as the video/interviews showed, he never acted personally, MJ and Pippen did.
There’s a lot more video I’m sure that may address this, but none of the actions of Krause in the first two episodes painted a picture of the narrative they’re running with that he wanted to blow up the Bulls for selfish ambitions.

Ribbing him like the short joke and the weight joke is hardly berating him. If you’re gonna base this on the DOC nobody went after Krause until he made it clear he was breaking the team up then told Phil that it didn’t matter if he went 82-0 he’d never coach the Bulls again. Some of you people are turning into CNN vs Trump with your Jordan derangement syndrome parsing through events to try and “get him”.

The jokes were not made in good fun. There’s a difference between two friends saying that kind of stuff and two coworkers who aren’t friendly doing it.

I didn't think this Doc could live up to the hype that has been building, but it did.
