Once Morey sent the tweet, any damage was basically a sunk cost at that point. There was no getting that billion dollars or whatever it ends up affecting the NBA / China relationship back.

What you see now from the NBA is the process of smoothing everything over behind the scenes w/ China and hoping the public’s attention gets diverted elsewhere.

Ha, if I get into any NBA this year, I'll shamelessly jump back on the hometown bandwagon and root for Zion and the Pels.

The NBA sees 1.3 billion people who they're trying to make generational fans out of. That's the end goal more than TV deals, etc. They want kids in China growing up NBA fans just as much as the money now.

If that is the case, then a response from the NBA was unnecessary. People are attaching the CCP and the Chinese population together, when in fact they are not. One just controls the other. The CCP needs the NBA as much as the NBA needs the CCP's approval. They want influence in our culture and they aren't going to turn their backs to more Dollars, which they desperately need right now.

This is why I think this will eventually and quietly work out. The NBA has something China's leadership wants too.

The intial response from China is designed to not look weak, but both sides have too much mutual motivation not to work this out.

That would imply both sides are rational actors who are thinking in similar terms.

The NBA is trying to save the China money without creating major problems at home by firing Morey and bowing down to a foreign dictatorship.

China is used to getting its way and being told “We don’t do that here” apparently gets a bug up their arse.

China is going to make a hard demand for Morey’s job and an apology.

The NBA will continue to soft pedal the whole thing and hope it goes away.

Honestly, I think Silver knows the league and China are separating but wants China to be seen as overreacting and pulling out rather than the NBA provoking them into doing so.

This right here.
Now, maybe China will shock the world and let this stuff go, but I would not count on it. Like I said earlier, we're talking about a government that banned Winnie the Pooh. Let that sink in.

^^^ This guy here is apparently a threat to social stability in China

The belief that the rest of the world would back an American based business vs China is just so American.

You say you pay attention to the rest of the world, but with this thread I don't think you do.

You seem like that classic cuck that apologizes profusely for America in hostel bars on your college study abroad. You were so caught up this time you failed to grasp the reality is that this isn't purely America vs. China. This is mankind vs. the oppression of a free society and systemic persecution of minority groups.

Had Silver decided to vigorously back Morey and immediately pull all league business out of China in response to their anti-free speech bullying, the NBA brand would have enjoyed worldwide acclaim.

Except in their second biggest market.

They already could have done that if they genuinely wanted to. There's a reason why a lot of this is posturing without full demands and/or unilateral pulling out.

Calling China a communist country is the most simplistic thing I’ve ever heard. Authoritarian? Yep. Not free? Yep. But I’ve seen some Randian shite in China that would make the most avowed Austrian blush. Money is king over there. And more and more of it. I’d consider China to be more corrupt than anything. Also stop posting on your made in China smartphones if you’re so damn mad.

They're a communist country bud Just because they may not be 100% pure communist at this point does not negate that statement in any way.

No shite, welcome to communism where money and towing the party line gets you influence.

What's next, going to tell me not to buy anything made in China? Welcome to the results of our trade being so heavily intertwined. People are still capable of boycotting and making a statement in a variety of ways, but some things aren't being cut out for sheer practicality reasons.

To do so would basically require telling China as a country to get bent regarding trade.
