Had Silver decided to vigorously back Morey and immediately pull all league business out of China in response to their anti-free speech bullying, the NBA brand would have enjoyed worldwide acclaim.

The money lost from China could have been made up on boosted sales and exposure in America, Europe, and other parts of the world.

The NBA could've been the wokest league in the world-- celebrated by all sides of the political spectrum in the civilized world. But instead, they cow-towed like the greedy, spineless bitches they are.... and in the end they will probably lose most or all of their China business in any event.

It’s easy to talk about racism, bathrooms, inequality and make yourself look good when you got nothing lose. But when it counts and things are really on the line, you got nothing to say.

Yeh they fricked up. There was no making China happy. They should have realized that. The only way China would have been happy is for Silver to fire Morey and say “We stand with china”

Which would never happen. Silver went wet blanket and tried to play the middle ground. That’s alose lose. China is done with him, and the rest of the world also is shaking their head at the NBA

This is stupid

So people were going to start watching basketball just because the nba stood up to China? Yea, I don’t think so

Maybe not. But the NBA absolutely could have won the goodwill of people worldwide

What he did managed to lose China, and piss off the rest of the world

Impressive

In westernized countries, yes.

The belief that the rest of the world would back an American based business vs China is just so American.

You say you pay attention to the rest of the world, but with this thread I don't think you do.

They lost money for being hypocritical. If they actually stand for freedom and against oppression, here’s your opportunity. If you stand with money and not “morals” why did you take on so many Social Justice causes?

People, in general, don’t like hypocrites.

You are correct on that end, as 10% of its revenue won’t just magically show up elsewhere.

OTOH, this blows up and their 70% of revenue in the core US and Canada market potentially takes a bigger hit than China shutting them out.

By not taking a stand one way or the other from the beginning this is what happened.

That’s ridiculous. And that would be such a rash and reckless decision to immediately sever all ties with China.

It’s just feelings, not some trade deal or economic agreement, so it really doesn’t mean all that much

Not really.

So wrong. People who don’t like their other stances still wouldn’t have liked them. They wouldn’t flip just because of this decision.

the irony of the NBA's China fiasco

Title had so much potential, but you took an arrogant, ignorant and simple political position.

The real irony is that a league based in a democratic & capitalistic country is bowing to a communist country because of their capitalistic nature. And the free speech heavily enjoyed by the members of the NBA is influenced so heavily by both capitalistic and communist powers. China’s money is driving this, not brute political force. Very capitalistic of them.

There isn’t a billion dollars of revenue in the US that nba is currently missing out on.

China has more people than Europe and North America combined. There's no way losing China wouldn't be an extraordinary hit.

I know this isn't the popular view, but this will drop out of the headlines, and when it does, it will get solved. Neither side seriously wants to walk out on a 4 billion dollar deal.
