quote:
Most of the world population are on the Chinese side. They think it is a riot. US is minority. Only 400 Millions people.
God, that's a ridiculous comment, given China's relationship with India, the 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, and the pure hatred most people in Southeast Asia have for China's imperialistic attitude.
quote:
The American people illusions stem from the big English medias. Not many American spend time reading newspaper from Singapore, Malaysia etc.
I've lived in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. I love both places and have lots of friends there.
But don't pretend for a second that their newspapers reflect public opinion. The American press is far from perfect, but it's at least free and transparent. No journalist in Singapore or Malaysia can criticize official government policy without fear of severe financial or physical retribution. Hong Kong once had a free and open press, but China has completely subverted it over the past ten years.
At the end of the day, this is about basic human rights and public discourse. I can openly criticize the US government when I see that it is failing its citizens. You have the ability to share your opinions on this board because of our freedoms.
However, if you or I live in China (or other authoritarian countries), we can not openly share dissenting opinions or work to correct injustices without fear of real violence to ourselves and our families This is what people in Hong Kong see. Their beautiful city is being overrun by money-hungry Chinese oligarchs who are rich enough to enjoy the freedoms of the West but corrupt enough to enslave their fellow citizens in a nation that, under Xi Jinping's rule, will only become more and more oppressive each year.
