Has anyone ever seen the in car photos of Dale’s crash?

Only Kenny Schrader saw Dale inside his car in the immediate aftermath.

And he'll take what he saw to his grave

Yeah. Schraeders reaction when he went to check on Dale is when I knewt was bad. He casually went to Dale’s car to check on him and he yen went frantic signaling safety crew to get there, and then slow walked back. He knew immediately.

Didn't they say he had was internally decapitated?

Likely saw his neck in an impossible position and as mentioned blood from nose, mouth, and ears.

I actually remember this like it was yesterday. Makes me feel old as dirt. I didn’t like Dale, thought he was a dirty racer in his later years, but he was the villain we loved to hate. I felt like the sport needed him, love or hate him.

I don't know how long people think Earnhardt was going to keep racing, he was nearing 50 when he died.

Junior was about half the driver of his dad, but is a great businessman. So the Earnhardt legacy in Nascar is alive and well. The guy has cars all over the racetracks of America and they are winning.

I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I was in high school and working a shift on the griddles at McDonalds on Rushing in Denham. I had just brought the left most top griddle down on a dozen 10/1 patties when I heard it on the radio we were listening to the race on. I was a casual but consistent NASCAR fan, and it still hit me hard for reasons I still don't understand. I clearly understood the magnitude of what had just happened.

Dale Earnhardt was more than just a driver or team owner. He was a massive influence on NASCAR. NASCAR listened to Dale more than they did any other driver. When he thought something was wrong in NASCAR, then NASCAR fixed it. No other driver has ever been able to replicate the voice and influence of Dale Earnhardt.

He had a basilar skull fracture, which in some cases can separate the skull from the spinal column. In most cases, full internal decapitation does not occur. Instead, blood vessels are torn and the person bleeds out in seconds.

Sure he was and so was Richard Petty and guys like Bill Elliot, who was named most popular driver 16 times during his career. It's also true that Senior was stubborn as hell. He came into Nascar quickly earning the nickname Ironhead. Unfortunately, this way of thinking helped lead to his untimely death.

Dale never wanted to wear head and neck restraints, because they were uncomfortable and restrictive. Plenty of folks tried to talk him out of it at a time technology was doing a much better job of keeping up with those horrendous crashes. Nascar finally gave in and grandfathered him in as an exception. Little did they know they were signing his death warrant. After his death, that, giving in crap to the drivers came to an abrupt halt.

Honestly … I bet he would not have anything to do with the current product because there’s no place in it for someone like him. In fact, there is zero chance that the Dale Earnhardt of 1979, if you could fast forward him 43 years, would even get a NASCAR pit pass in 2023, let alone a ride, because people ought to realize by now that NASCAR doesn’t want the eyeballs or the money of the fans who gravitate to him.

But consider this alternative scenario … say he walked away from that crash. Say 10 years later, after maybe driving for two or three more years, then retiring to run DEI, he sees the direction that NASCAR is going, becoming more about the show than the racing, and his bitching and complaining goes nowhere.

Who’s the one man who had the stature, the respect, the clout and the ability to find money to launch a serious, old-school alternative that would be about the racing and not the show? And who wouldn’t be worrying about making a zillion dollars from it, first because his priority would be the sport, and second because he had the country smarts not to spend his own money?

He’d probably be up to his mustache in Smoke’s SRX deal right now, likely even have come out of retirement to have some fun.

It’s been said by a poster here, and I agreed with him, that Schrader probably has PTSD to this day from what he saw. The results of a basilar skull fracture of that extent is on the short list of as bad as it gets.

He more than likely does and has not described what he saw to anyone publicly.

Kenny did in a recent interview go as far as saying he knew Dale was dead when he looked in the car.

Jimmy Johnson and the 48 team won 7 titles that no one ever seems to talk about.

Maybe the overall talent during the 48’s dominance was not as good as it is today.

Jimmie is a top-5 all-time driver. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

But he's not Senior/Pearson.
