MJ crushing a whole pizza the night before a finals game. Players eat like shite or whatever they want on reg season roadtrips but everyone’s in the zone come playoff time and there’s more time to eat right versus city and hotel hopping during back to backs. I’ve heard stories of people eating crazy pregame meals but a guy as locked in and fiercely competitive as MJ smashing a whole pizza the night before a game doesn’t seem like an MJ thing.

Carb-o-load the night before is pretty common. Don't marathonners always go for huge pasta dishes the night before?

The only question for me is how did they know it was being ordered for Michael Jordan?

MJ didn't call himself to order it (at least according to the film). I can't imagine his groupees would have told the pizza place they were ordering for Jordan or even used his credit card to pay (if they even pre-paid with a card, which wasn't that common in 1997). The only way I could see the place knowing it was for MJ is if the hotel made the call rather than one of the groupees.

That aside, it's hard to imagine MJ would lie in THAT situation to cover up nefarious activity. The guy had played in a ton of playoff and finals game before that one and seemingly had no history of doing something the night before to significantly impair his physical ability to play in a game. Sure, I guess he could have gone out drinking, doing drugs, or both. But that doesn't seem likely. First, if he did do such it undoubtedly wouldn't have been the first time he did so before a finals game. Yet, he never impaired himself to that extent before a game NOR does he seems like the kind of guy to take such a risk in light of his competitiveness. Athletes aren't like us. They'll go out drinking, doing drugs, women etc until the wee hours of the morning before a game. But they'll generally know when to stop to prevent it from affecting their play.

Second, Jordan never seems to have truly gotten over the fact Pippen sat out much of Game 7 of the 1990 Eastern conf. finals with a headache. I doubt he would willing do anything to put himself in a position where he couldn't play in a Finals game.

Third, Salt Lake City might be the most BORING city in the NBA. Even if he wanted to go out on the town and tear it up, where in the hell would he go?

Isn't it plausible that when they got to the hotel with the pizza and told a staff member that they were delivering it to that particular room, that a few of the guys working at the hotel tagged along to hopefully get to see Mike?

I'm shocked they gave enough info in the order that Pizza Hut could have known it was going to MJ.

Just say it's going to Jerry Krause and use MJ's room number. Other than the fact Krause might have ordered several pizzas from his own room that night, the plan is flawless.

His trainers didn’t seem like the type to condone devouring a pizza the night before a game but yea, MJ is MJ, you can’t tell him what to do

quote:

They covered this. They called all over the place looking for delivery food and this was the only place they could get to bring him something

Yea that’s what im saying, it sounds like either they didn’t try hard enough, didn’t feel like physically looking for something or sending an errand boy out for something or Theres just more to the story

quote:

Well, they admitted it was 2 guys. So that would be weird on its own. They must've known somehow. Probably a locked down floor as well, so that might've tipped them off.

So the pizza place says 2, MJ’s team says 5. And you would think there’d be security who would’ve prevented an unusually staffed pizza delivery. Who knows

But to me this is nothing for Jordan. I don't think he had to be like Larry Bird and run stairs and sit alone in the dark before games and then show up 3 hours to the stadium before anyone else to practice jumpshots alone.

I think Jordan was like, I'm just better than you. I can sit up all night and gamble and drink and still kick your arse the next day.

Magic said Jordan wanted to play cards ALL NIGHT LONG before games on the Dream Team and almost never went to bed.

Crushing a pizza is child's play. Jordan had super DNA, he didn't need to protect his body or get sleep.

You guys are the biggest Lebron fans ever. I haven't seen an MJ thread that didn't mention Lebron.

They may not have. A lot of these teams when traveling, all stay at the same hotels, so I would guess a local pizza place would know which hotel that is. They get a call late at night from that hotel during the Finals, they think it's someone with the Bulls so why not tag along to possibly catch a glimpse of Jordan?

Something I didn’t understand about the story, how would they even know it was Jordan whom it was being delivered to.

I seriously doubt Jordan was calling restaurants usiing his real name “Michael Jordan”

Straight up y’all it doesn’t make any sense for that pizza place to deliberately poison Michael Jordan: it’s criminal, it definitely renders them vulnerable for a civil suit as well not to mention damage to their business reputation because Michael Jordan got sick off their pizza and they poisoned it. Straight up I think it was just the perfect storm of a unwittingly defective pizza and Jordan got sick because it exacerbated all the partying and shite he normally does the night before games. The odds for this are pretty bad unless the entire Salt Lake City community conspired to ensure this happened, which is quite unreasonable.

I agree, as much as all the speculators and conspiracy theorists want there to be a conspiracy with all this shite, it’s probably and most likely the most perfect storm of a coincidence in history, doesn’t help that Jordan likes to party some the night before games too

I call bullshite on it being a hangover. Do you guys REALLY think they wouldn't EASILY give him IV fluids leading up to the game if that was the problem?

No. Picture this: They get to the hotel and tell the person at the front desk, "I got a delivery for room ???." The front desk person knows that the Bulls are on that floor. So he and a few more employees tag along or "assist" them in going to the room in hopes of seeing who's ordering the pizza.

Reasonable scenario

Didn't even have to be spoiled.

Eating an entire pizza could give you a bad stomach.

No way it was a hangover.

It was Harold - the disgruntled employee! Passed over for a promotion Harold swore vengeance on his boss a diehard Bulls fan. So, he devoted himself to the Jazz. Then one night he overheard info about were the Bulls were staying and went all in on putting expired pepperoni on the pizza order that night. Unfortunately it never went according to plan.
