The difference between the Astros and top contenders

Astros make any talk for Bregman a non-starter
Red Sox see who they want in a front line starter and do not let anything stop them, even giving up THE TOP PROSPECT in baseball

I remember almost this exact thread when the Angels signed Pujols and Hamilton.

Red Sox wouldn't give up benitendi

Not sure it's a Sox/Stros thing. DD is infamous for selling prospects for superstars. Lots of good GM's wouldn't have done it.

Like how the Nats wouldn't give up Trea Turner this year
Or the Cubs wouldn't give up Schwarber last year

Red Sox paid $38M this year for Sale and gave up the 2 best minor league prospects in the game. Not to mention the other prospects they had to give up.
Sale was too much for the Astros. So is Chris Archer. The Astros will slug their way to 95 wins with the current pitching they have now.

One is not like the other

And the red Sox are in a much better position to give up Moncada then anyone else would. What's your point

Stupid comparison given the Sox have an infinite payroll.

I may be wrong about this--and I hope I am--but I didn't think Bregs was worthy of the 2nd pick, and think he'll come back down to earth a bit. I may would trade him to win now. To me, he's ways just struck me as a high floor, but relatively low ceiling guy. Like I think Pedroia is his absolute max. Which is fantastic. But I wouldn't consider him untouchable if you feel you have all the pieces besides a starter to win now.

And you can also add the dodgers because we weren't giving up urias

I thought the same thing until he adjusted to the show. He is very good. All-star level defensively and a very good bat. He will likely have a down year this season but he showed enough.
There is no way I would have traded Bregman unless it was straight up for a Sale or Archer.

Umm, the purpose of this thread and the purpose of the "lets all laugh at the Astros for not signing Pujols " threads are absolutely identical.
Troll gonna troll.

He changed his swing, approach and body (added 20 pounds of muscle) to adjust to professional baseball. Mainieri wanted him to hit line drives and ground balls due to the dead bats of college ball. Bregman now profiles as a bat good enough for third base. Ceiling is higher than Pedroia.

Wrong. Good GM's know their price and won't cross that line.
It's easy to just give up your best prospects for big-name players. It takes discipline to know when to say no.

I'd give up Bregman now for a Number 3 starter
He sucks and will bust out. Overrated

The kid the Red Sox gave up was better than Perdroia.

You only trade prospects when you are 1 piece away. Trading prospects any sooner is a good way to be dwelling in mediocrity in 3 years time.
