Maybe it's just his size I can't get over. I'm not sure his body will hold up over a long career. And he was already so polished, I'm not sure how much room there is to improve. But, I heard a guy on the radio last year who had no Astros affiliation and he said what he does best is barrel up the ball. In/out, fastball/off speed, he finds a way to square the ball up. That's a great, relatively untraceable skill. I hope he has a great career. Again, he wouldn't be untouchable to me. But I wouldn't have taken him 2nd overall either, so clearly they think really really high of him.

Pujols hasn't actually been horrible, he just hasn't been worth the contract...
Don't remember too many praising Hamilton saying he would put them over. Especially since he was coming off a down year. I was a fan of that deal if he bounced back but he didn't but it was no where near the Pujols deal.

Pujols had a really good year last year. Not worth his salary if they were expecting the .330/40 bombs/125 RBI(I know that's not the 3 stats you nerds use) top 2 in the MVP guy he was in St. Louis, though. But he was really good. Of course, he's out 4 months with his bad wheels now, so.

You all treated Bregman like a savior last year and he looked like a career .250 hitter instead

My point is... OP just wants to slam Astros fans, all the while ignoring all of the other non-Top contenders.
Personally, this trade was good for both sides. Red Sox now have a dominant rotation that makes them the favorites to get to the World Series. They are set for the next couple of years, at least. White Sox jump start their rebuild.
Now, take Bregman, Martes and two other prospects (most likely young Tucker) away from the Astros and add Sale. What do you get? A decent team with an edge on their division, at most. They would still have an injury plagued McCullers and in iffy Keuchel. Definitely not World Series favorites.
Anyone can't see this, they don't understand baseball.

He went 1 for 24 in july and still managed to hit .264.
He was ripping the ball to finish the season.

I haven't followed this hot stove season, are the RedSox gonna try to replace Ortiz's offense by building a dominant staff? Have they signed a bat?
Posted on 12/6/16 at 5:37 pm to Floating Change Up
You have a dominating ace, a couple of guys with potential and a young core around him. You just built a 3-4 year window to win a world series with the right breaks.

Mitch Moreland to DH.... They don't need to replace they had the best offense even without his bat. They traded Shaw to upgrade the pen as well.

And just when the Red Sox window starts closing, all that excellent Yankees talent will mature and everyone will have to endure their reign of terror again.

The other contenders actually have a shot at a WS title?

You seem like you need some attention, so I gave you an upvote.

Maybe. You always risk a lot taking such a dynamic bar out of the middle of the lineup. Besides his actual production, how much did his mere presence affect the entire lineup, especially those right around him.
It's great to go out with such a great offensive season, but if they're going all-in like it appears they are, I would probably make a 1-year offer to Ortiz that would be hard to turn down. But I'm pretty sure he was juicing so maybe he doesn't want to risk getting caught.

I know he filed his paperwork so it is official. Of course a player can always undo that and maybe he comes back midseason

I may be wrong about this--and I hope I am--but I didn't think Bregs was worthy of the 2nd pick, and think he'll come back down to earth a bit. I may would trade him to win now. To me, he's ways just struck me as a high floor, but relatively low ceiling guy. Like I think Pedroia is his absolute max. Which is fantastic. But I wouldn't consider him untouchable if you feel you have all the pieces besides a starter to win now.
this was a fair take a year ago at this time. I would've still taken him at 2 but would never have expected him to do what he did last year.
But he moved himself into crazy good standing this year where you have a super versatile defender who can play 4 positions (well) and can hit at an elite level with above average power. You move a number of prospects to get that, not move him to get something else.
The other issue is knowing what exactly a game changing starter looks like. Coming into this year Lester and Hendricks would've had crazy different acquisition costs but both were arguably the 'difference' for the Cubs.

you've already thrown out the Pedroia comp which if that's who you project him to be, then you don't move him period but there's another comp like this on his own team in Altuve. Guys with this skillset are just as rare as top end starters.

what does that even mean?
is he any smaller than craig biggio or a guy like paul molitor or 100's of other guys that have played MLB baseball at that size?

Boston has a few more prospects to play around with, plus I don't think it was certain where Moncada was going to play in Boston. He's primarily a MIF. They're pretty set there.
