And the Masters is just another event on the PGA schedule?

I'm not sure what's worse, this take or the upvotes it got.

The Masters easy. Not sure I would go to the derby if it was free.

I have never been but it is on the bucket list and I don’t even play golf. I am pretty sure that one item I probably won’t be able to check off.

Masters

Churchill Downs has in essence run the Derby into the ground from an attending/entertainment perspective. It used to be a lot more fun than it was, especially locally. Now every inch of it is commercialized, expensive, and they've managed to even frick up the construction of the track/infield.

And sadly that has carried over to The Oaks (Friday before) and Thurby (Thursday before) as well.

To all the people who say the Masters and it ain't close...what if you knew the Derby would be having a horse like Secretariat. Say he's already run sub 2 at 10 furlongs a few times and you have the opportunity to be there. Would that change your mind?

Jack Nicklaus himself said watching Secretariat was unbelievable and made him cry.

quote:

It was more than just a horse race that day at Belmont 41 years ago. Secretariat’s otherworldly performance inspired people and still does to this day. Even the stoic Jack Nicklaus, who rewrote the record books in professional golf, was moved to tears. Nicklaus once told CBS commentator Heywood Hale Broun that he cried watching the race and couldn’t understand why. Broun responded, “All of your life, in your game, you’ve been striving for perfection. At the end of the Belmont, you saw it.”

I think the reason the answer is easily the Masters for me is because I don't even know what the bolded part means. I've never understood the entertainment of horse racing. I also understand that there are plenty of people that feel the same way about golf. Horse racing was just never anything my dad cared about so it never passed on to me. However, I vividly remember plenty of Easter Sundays watching the Masters with my family.

That makes sense. Most people know nothing about thoroughbred racing because it's a small fraternity but golf is played widely and has many fans who speak the golf language.

Sub 2 at 10 furlongs means under 2 minutes at a mile and a quarter, the Derby distance.

Interesting.

Being from Lexington, would you choose The Masters over Keeneland?

I go to Keeneland all the time. Went to the Breeders Cup this fall…it’s magical.

But,

I’ve been trying for years to get on the grounds of ANCC for the Masters.

I should've asked about the Breeder's Cup specifically. I've never been to the Breeder's Cup but would like to go at Keeneland or Churchill in the future.

Derby

Drinks, betting, don't have to walk and don't have to be there all day. And the entire event is right before my eyes in a party/pageantry atmosphere. And I have easy access to a bathroom.

Considering the derby is the first chance 3 yr olds have to run 10 furlongs, I’m gonna say impossible.

Their trainers can run them 10 whenever they want to.
