but Devers isn't some angel here and contributed a lot to his own problems.
you either fricked up here or you fricked up giving him the deal you did 18 short months ago.
either way, the problem is the Sox front office

The front office now is not the front office that gave him the deal two years ago

This is infantiling Devers. He's a grown arse man who almost assuredly told the front office he would do the work to be a better fielder.

lol Devers just said he do anything to help the Giants and Melvin said he’d be at first base at some point.
What a cocksucker
What a cocksucker

As a Yankee fan, I’m just glad he’s not in Boston anymore. Dude was a bonafide Yankee killer

He’s a bad defender so he’s not a third baseman either

why wouldn’t he? they conducted themselves normally and, you know, asked him before discussing with the media.

I understand and agree with some of what you’ve said in this thread. Neither party is innocent, but ultimately it just seems like you’re calling for more player coddling.

Mate he got 300 million dollars to play for the org. They asked him to try first base and he said no. You really think if he worked there and it wasn’t going to work out they would have put him out there to embarrass himself and make their team worse?
Like everyone has said both parties fricked this, but shite man it’s okay to say Devers is an immature a-hole and carries some of the blame pie

Like the earlier poster said, Devers is also not a third baseman

Right he probably would have been a bit of a goof at first base too. not saying he’d be good.
I think if he earnestly gave it a shot and tried to work there, even if they decided it wasn’t going to work, a lot of this kind of just goes away
But the more I think about it probably not until Breslow went away. There is very clearly not much love lost between the player and him

i don’t see it as coddling i see it as having a professional organization that respects its employees as human beings. You don’t have to have a therapy session with the guy but you should a) plan/communicate in a straightforward way with your star player and b) give him what he needs to be successful if you’re asking him to make a major professional change.
i don’t know Devers from Adam, he could be a huge a-hole for all i know, but this is a flaw with teams in all sports and a big flaw with this one in particular as of late.
and don’t give me this stuff about it’s a different front office now because the ownership hasn’t changed. If you’re John Henry you need to be aware and manage what’s going on with your major investments, this isn’t the 4th outfielder we’re talking about.
Bottom line, they made this trade because their feelings got hurt and their egos wouldn’t let them deal with the problem, and now you’ve set the franchise back in a major way for the second time in half a decade.

when you invest 300 million in a player you should talk to him about directly and honestly about a position change before you bring it up to the media.

making an effort only applies to the player apparently

And the $300 million they gave him should help his hurt feelings a little bit

Yea for sure. FO def didn’t make an effort to make the team better by going out and signing Bregman and trading for Crochet to help build something around the star player to win
And giving him the biggest contract in organization history.

You are saying the same thing just on the other side.

you invested all this money into the player, doesn’t it behoove you to have management actually, you know, manage the player and the situation to a positive outcome?

Devers has been playing and playing well. It’s not like he said i’m not going out there or faked an injury or something.

The player was given a massive investment that changes the course of his family’s lives for generations and generations. Does it not behoove the player to actually, you know, live up to the contract and the situation to a positive outcome?
