re: The blatant manipulation of rankings is concerning and bad for football

They're going to get the 4 teams right. We're just quibbling about who's 1,2, and 3 for the most part. It's not like we're talking about whether teams deserve to be in or not at this point.

No. Settle down, I didn’t say anything about the buckeyes...

I thought all along they should have stuck with the BCS or a similar formula and just taken four teams instead of this committee deal.

Exactly. It would be:
1. OSU
2. LSU
3. Clemson
4. Georgia
5. Wisconsin
6. Utah
7. Oklahoma
8. Penn St
9. Florida
10. ND

Although I disagree, I don't have a problem with OSU at number 1 (even if their fans are snarky). However I have a problem with the committee trying to justify their rankings by purposely overrating and underrating teams. The coveted Eye Test says Auburn and Bama should both probably be in the top 10 if we are being honest. It is also bullshite that Michigan and Cincinnati barely dropped when other teams would drop way further for losing the same way. Also Penn State in the top 10 is laughable. It's the same shite with the AP back in the day with the AP voting a select few teams for the titles. It's all bs. And bring back the crystal ball while you're at it.

But for #4 and if any of #1, 2, or 3 lose, there will absolutely be that debate

Too much influence from TV ratings
Blaming TV ratings is the dumbest, laziest sports conspiracy there is but given the first statement it makes absolutely no sense with these rankings. Do you think it would be better for TV to have Utah over OU?

Bring back computers to do the rankings and let the chips fall where they may
All the computers have Ohio State #1 and a couple have Clemson #2

The thing is, the CFP rankings are pretty close to the Massey Composite. So if computers did the rankings, more people would be pissed because Wisconsin and ND would be ranked higher, and Baylor lower. But the rest would be the same.
I love that this is getting down votes. They say they want the computers, then you point out what the computers have and they down vote
The only real problem i have with the rankings this week is Cincinnati only dropping 1 spot. That feels like they are trying to prop them up for Ohio States sake. Scheduling Cincinnati is not trying. You schedule A&M like Clemson or Miami like Florida did or Auburn if you are Oregon you are at least trying to schedule a good OOC game, Cincinnati is a rent a win that turned out to be decent

Go back to the bus, take the top 4, fk the humans

remove SOS, eye test and quality loss/win BS, and score doesnt matter so a 1 point win is the same as a 99 point win
and they dont need computers during the season either
everything gets earned on the field so if ball state beats #4 bamas then ball state gets bama #4 ranking and bama gets whatever ball state was ranked or not ranked as

bus i assume is auto correct but the BCS was 2/3 human polls. You guys melting and longing for the computers should go check them out

And do you honesty trust all the sports writers to cast a fair ballot? Every week there is some nut ranking their local team many pegs higher than others across the nation just cause. And do you want a coach to fill out a ballot? Honestly coaches probably give their ballot to a junior staffer to make their picks, and no one is stopping them from manipulating it to help that team out.
No one seems to complain about the selection committee for March madness. Really though what matters is the 4 teams for the playoff. So far they have historically done that part right. Who gives a frick what cincy is ranked

Doesn’t the committee factor computer rankings into their weighting scheme?

The BCS and committee were very close other than a few obvious changes.
BCS has Wiscosin #9, Michian #16, Minnesota #17, and Iowa 19,
CFB has Wisconsin #8, Michigan #14, Iowa #16, and Minnesota #18.
So yeah it was close, but its more than a coincidence that they moved every single one of these teams in a better position. And may I add that these are pretty much the only teams that moved up and not back.

I just think the problems would be the same.
Unless you can account for the reality that the ACC and Big 10, in a given year, have one team each that realistically sit in a tier that includes 2-4 SEC teams, you'll always have these issues.
The only way I can think to quantify this stuff in a way that would be even remotely unbiased would involve some multi-year lookback akin to UEFA coefficients in soccer.

Almost nobody was in favor of ditching the BCS for a committee. Most people in this site just wanted to take the top 4 of the BCS.

You can't say frick the committee then come back and say you want the BCS back.
Is this really enough difference to create an outrage?

Do you really care about the rankings being structured in a way that issues “resolve themselves”?
They’re giving meaning to championship games and creating a defacto expanded playoff. It’s not terrible. The only thing that’s annoying is they’re coy and subversive about it all. If they just came out and admitted what they were doing, it’d probably be less offensive
